Thought some of you might want this gizmo. Scan tool for only $130.
I'd buy if I had the cash floating around.

I have something similar for my mustang, made by Autotap. It's a bit more intense, as it can see everything going on in the PCM: stats here (http://www.autotap.com/enhanced_parameters_ford.asp). The only thing it can't do it change anything, but that's what my chip is for. They can be very useful for diagnosis problems, and plus it's just fun to watch what's going on in the car brain.

I would buy one if it displayed more PCM functions. To me personnally it's a bit expensive for the few features it has. Actually, I would be more tempted to buy it if it had just one more displayable parameter, tranny temp. Watching tranny & water temps real-time would be nice. I'm spoiled by my mustang, I've got a full suite of gauges in it (water temp, oil press, tranny temp, oil temp, boost press, fuel press, EGT). If I need a yota code reader/clearer in the future I'll probably buy another Autotap. It will at least display more OBDII parameters, the down side being it needs to be hooked up to a computer (lap top if you have one, or an old comp in the garage like I have).

I think that a while back I asked about tranny temp and was told that Toyota did not have a digital sensor on it. Just some sort of temp limit sensor.
Some guy with an FJC has a flat PC mounted on the passenger side so he could use Autotap! Autotap is not useful to me if I have to sit at home with a PC. I think that $130 is cheap enough as the cost of the individual guages and labor to install them would exceed that. The Expeditions West guys have 2 or 3 guages mounted in an A-pillar pod right where our 4Runner handgrips are.

Heh, I actually need to take some "full body" recent shots; only recent pix I have are of mods. I haven't taken any full outside pix since I bought it I don't think.

Been meaning to post a picture showing how the Scan Gauge can color match the Toyota display

I used the supplied Velcro tape to mount it right on the column where it is easily watched without being a distraction.

Thx, very informative. I just wish the 4Runner had a tranny temp sensor as well. Intake temp is probably interesting to see, especially on hot days.

It is a Garmin 276C. I have an external antenna mounted and still need to hardwire the power and speaker cable.
here is a fuzzy photo. The Garmin site will have good detailed shots

Where did you get that mirror? This is not the OEM one for 4Runner. I know it for sure, because mine is different.

I bought it on EBay and installed it myself. It is made in China but seems to be used in some Japanese cars. I like it better than the mirror that only shows a letter (N-S-E-W) for direction. It is auto dimming, has the compass in degrees and has external temperature and UV sensors.

Was it design for Toyota or just some aftermarket which can be fit in any vehicle?

Not designed for the Toyota but I like the larger mirror surface as I can easily see both of the back-up mirrors on the rear pillars. It easily fit onto the Toyota mirror mount.

I like it a lot as it is always right there, no need to fire up a PC and have it setting in the passenger seat, ready to fall off.
I try to watch the instantaneous MPG to modify my driving and I like having the DC voltage and water temp gauges too. Since it can read the CEL engine codes it will be useful as a diagnostic tool too.

Where did you mount your external antenna?
I mounted mine under the dash, in the factory GPS antenna location. It wirks great, and is completely hidden.

Mine is a mag mount up on the roof, drivers side near the front of the rack mount. The cable comes down inside the small channel between the windshield and the A pillar. Then down into the engine bay, through the firewall, up inside the A pillar molding, across to where the mirror is and then down to the GPS.
I like it up there as it always has a good view of the geostationary WAAS satellite and I generally have 7 to 9 foot accuracy on location readouts.

Jim,
I like your cable routing plan. I am also running the Garmin mag-mount external antenna. I had it mounted outside for a while, coming in the door jam, across the door gasket. This allowed water in, and didn't look good.
If you need to replace your windshield, will there be any trouble with your wire running in that channel?
I compared the signal on mine (Garmin GPS V) in 3 locations: roof, on dash, and under dash. I found no measurable difference, between the three locations. I was very suprised to have the same signal strength, from under the dash, as on the roof. WHen under the dash, I would think that the roof metal would block at least one sat from view.
Maybe there is a GPS thread we could be adding this to, instead of hijacking the "Scan Tool" thread.
