Howdy,

My 4Runner has the base stereo, and I'm wondering what's involved to do my own upgrade to the JBL 6-disc system. Head units appear to be easy to find on eBay. Are there also speaker additions/replacements? Is there a different wiring harness? Any issues with retaining steering wheel controls if I put a factory JBL head unit in?

Thanks!

check the audio section over at t4r.org. A few people have asked that question with responses, but the consensus is that it really isn't worth it because of the wiring harness that you can't really just buy. Although, if you are still interested pm me

For a cheap and killer upgrade get a Scion head unit by pioneer off of EBay. 100% compatible:

160 watts, single CD no cassette, satellite ready and almost IPod ready (needs a funky wring harness), multi color display, compatible with steering wheel controls and it plugs into your stock harness and dash opening. One small mod is drilling a hole for the 4Runner's second antenna.

Thanks for the info! I was afraid there would be a different wiring harness for the JBL setup. WAY more work than I'd want to get into.

I'll check out that audio section at t4r.org too. I'm sure I'll learn more interesting tidbits there.

Thanks!
