So.. I was at the dealership the other day, and they surprisingly had about 6 FJ's (very uncommon for Amarillo, TX). Anyway, one of them had an ARB roof rack attached. I just wanted to make it known, especially to people who have not seen this rack in person, that is looks awesome! It is really beefy and looks like it could take on quite a load. Really nice welds and great, expedition-style look. I didn't have my camera with me to snap some pics, but here are some that probably most of y'all have reviewed already.
Check this thread on yotatech for good pics (post #14 has close-ups): http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=78950
Of course, this is a full replacement rack that mounts to the stock locations without the stock rack in place. It also adds a third set of mounts in the middle (nutserts added in the channel, I suppose).
Does anyone have this rack? Have experience with it? Installing the extra set of mounts? Cost? The only thing I'm weary of, is not being able to get it in the garage after lifting, tires, etc.. The Gobi Stealth would the the only option there, I guess (nice, but not quite as rugged).
Please, discuss.

The FJC, GX and Prado has 6 mount points for the roofrack, only the 4Runner has 4 points.
I believe Cruiserhead posted some ifno on theARB rack already, it think he also spoke to Slee regarding the application. Last I spoke with Slee it required to holes in the roofrail area.
ARB is releasing a 4Runner specific rack. According to ARB it will be this year.

Thanks Mike, I didn't even realize that it wasn't out yet.. I guess I just figured because of that thread on yotatech. Apparently that was all pre-production stuff.
Man, ARB is slow! AND, another instance of "FJ elitism!!!"
JK.. I'm not that bitter!
Still, the 4Runner rack will be pretty much the same and looks great, IMO!!

I emailed ARB about an estimated time of release on their roof rack for the 4th gen. Here's the response I got back:
"Thank you for contacting us here at ARB.
Currently ARB does not have a roof rack for this application… The photographs are prototypes that have outfitted to our 4 Runner.
We have created a database that records customer requests. Therefore, when this part does become available, someone from ARB will contact you, and let you know of this new product release. ARB still does not offer retail sales, but when this part does become available, we could also refer you to a dealer nearest you.
Best Regards,
Scott Cohen
Customer Service Manager"
So.. looks like they're not planning on making one yet... ????
Sad if they don't.. I really like it.. :mecry:
Hmmm... this is what they sent me in January:
We expect to have one for later this year.

Hi,
I was wondering if you guys are planning on producing a roof rack for the new 4Runners?
If so, any idea when to expect them?
Thanks,

Hmmmm.. well, you got an email from the President.. so I'll be optimistic, as my response came only from a Customer Service Manager.
Maybe I'll email them back at some point to find out more, mentioning this email from Mr. Jim Jackson.
Thanks for posting that.

I'll send another email to the folks at ARB about it, but I wouldn't be too confident that you would be able to get on anytime soon.
I'm sure the FJ's (or some other vehicle) could be modified with different brackets, etc. to make it fit if you really wanted to.. (as long as the rack itself is the correct size.)
Where there's a will, there's a way.. as my dad always said. :)
Everyone should email them, put the fire in their bellies about it:

When I looked at the photos of the ARB 4th gen it seemed as if the roof rack/basket was from a Prado or something similar. It had six mounting points and in one of the photos it did not match the factory roof mounting bolts.

I'm so sick of waiting around for ARB to manufacture things for the 4th gen. I will not buy from them since we got the Shrockworks bumper, the CBI rear and now the other roof rack maker (sorry can't remember the company name).
In Oz I was a die hard ARB buyer but the whole episode with the front bumper left a sour taste in my mouth. Sorry, just venting.
bulldog
03-28-2007, 09:22 PM
AT least they got the bumper out eventually :D And the OME suspension. Like most big businesses they seem to eb volume driven, so they probably wont do a roofrack till they believe their is enough volume (if they ever believe their will be enough for the 4Runner).
So it will probably be like the OME suspension, buy the Prado part and figure it out yourself.

Do they use the ARB rack for the Prado 120? And how do they mount it fro the 6 mounting points.
I believe you said in the othwe thread they drill holes for th center mount points, but I also saw the frotn holes seem to not align with the factory holes on the 4Runner.
What would be great is if ARB or somebody can supply exactly what is needed to make their rack work on the 4Runner. Also if they have an estimate of the load range of their rack.

OH OK, Tim Lund. He is a good guy. He worked very hard to get the ARB front bumper out for the Taco, 4Runner and FJC. Basically all adoptions of the Prado bumper. He also worked with James a bit on the OME suspensions.
It looks like they made bracket that bolts to the stock locations and then runs along the roof channels. The ARB rack then bolts into this bracket (see Teotwaki's pics above). Have they given any indication on the load rating when doing this? If you are seriously interested, you might want to validate that first.
This bracket might also work for the African Outback roofrack, hmmmmmm.

bulldog,
i will give him a call 2marow, and ask what the load rateings are.all i asked him when i talked to him today was ,how it worked and he told me the third bracket would fit in the channel and disribute the weight better by the sound of it your choice to to bolt it directly to your truck they use a landcruiser rack part # 3800020m

Dude, you might want to hold off on the ARB or Gobi. I'm serious. I and a couple of NVTTORA friends are going to Flagstaff next weekend and get my Blackout Custom made roof rack!!!!:cool1:
I'm going to have him custom mount it to my existing oem rack mounts. It's going to kick ass, and be much less expensive than the ridiculous prices the other two companies are charging.:2cents

I got a question, and I am not sure if it is answerable since none o the final product has yet to be produced.... but if I was to get one o these ARB full racks where we pull the factory rack off, how easy is ARB to take off? And are there plugs for the holes where they attach to the roof? I'd like to be able to cruise around with no racks for day to day driving, with presumably plugs for the holes where the attachments go, and then put on the full ARB racks (or Blackout racks or Gobi or whatever...) when I am in full blown expedition mode... Does anyone know if this is feasible?
Thanks...

As far as taking it on and off, I don't see the point, that's why I'm getting a full Blackout Safari rack this weekend..
I don't want to be hassled with taking it on and off all the time. As far as plugging the holes, you could just put the bolts back in I guess.
If you want to be taking it on and off all the time, just get Blackout's 60x45 rack and mount it to the stock roof rack/rails. That way you don't have to be taking the full rack on and off all the time.
You'd need at least two people every time to do thus process, it would be a major PITA!!! Just my :2cents :2cents :2cents :2cents :2cents

These full size racks are definitely not meant to be taken of and put back often. Way too much of a hassle. You might also want to look at the African Outback racj, where you can actually remove the top railign easily when you don't want it on. I think that will work much easier than a full complete rack. Unfortunately there is not a AO rack available for the 4Runner at this time.

Well, realistically, I am going out on expeditions where I need the rack, at best, once a month, more probably once every other month (I feel for my purposes a rack is only gonna be real necessary for treks of longer than 2 days, but that is just me...), so taking it on and off every month or two aint gonna be a huge deal...
If I am just gonna put a rack on the stock, I would just go with Yakima or Thule or something, but then I would run into rpoblems with the weight limit (I'd like to avoid these...) and the loosening of these racks whentraveling at high speeds over washboards... those were my concerns...
I figure, I could just take off the stock rack, get either the arb (when available....) or the Blackout, then put it on for the larger expeditions which only happen in my somewhat busy sched every month or two...
Mahybe my thinking is off (it always is, ask my wife...) but that is what I am thinking...

This weekend in Flagstaff/Sedona. AZ. See the trip planning thread, and while you're there, follow the link to our NVTTORA trip planning thread. We have at least three (3) trucks going, maybe more.
Closer to home for you is the Jawbone cleanup. See that thread as well. We spent three days there last Oct., cool place. Then, if Andries or Mark plan it, Big Bear Brai3.
In September, we'll have our 2nd Annual Toyota120 Mojave Road trip!!! Stay tuned for more on that trip. You should check out the trip reports for some of our past trips.
Now, lets get back on topic!:D

Getting back to the ARB roof racks. has anyone seen the FJ cruiser "half rack" It says it measeures 52"x44". I measured my OEM racks and 44" is about the same width as OEM and 52" is a couple inches longer than the flat "straight" part of the OEM racks. So if someone could find a way to mount it to the existing mounting points I think it would look pretty good, Unless of course you are looking for a full size rack, but seems promising.

however, if I could find a trashed fj in a junk yard, i could just rip off the rack and hopefully slap it on mine for cheap.

Isn't there a lot more curve in the roof of the FJ? And the rack bolts into 6 points. It seems if you mount the front and rear points of the FJ rack, the middle mounts would have a large gap between them and the 4Runner roof.
