Finally, I cleaned her up yesterday and shot some good pics worthy of putting up. I bought a Limited back in December, immediately traded a guy for 17 inch SR5 wheels and tires were traded for BFG's AT KO's in 275/70/17. I had the dealer throw in the body parts of a Trail Edition in the original deal for me to change out. Turned out to be 30 parts as all the exterior plastic had to be changed out to make it work. I have a Toytec spacer in the front now and will someday dump the X-reas for real coilovers.PIAA 510's in cut outs in the grill. New AR Teflon wheels and BFG MT KO's in 305/65/17 next.
Here are some pics. This is a loaded Limited 4x4 with Trail Edition parts.

updated pic with BFG MT's and AR Mojave's

What's all that stuff hanging down up front?

harper7
03-15-2010, 06:22 PM
It's a plastic cooling duct to bring air across the bottom of the engine /tranny. It wont last long! All 5th Gens have it.It's riveted on or else I would have taken it off already.

Ludedude
03-15-2010, 06:22 PM
Is it plastic or metal?

harper7
03-15-2010, 06:26 PM
The front part that hangs down there is plastic with steel and holes with grates behind it.

Ludedude
03-15-2010, 06:27 PM
That's so odd. Nice looking truck but I never noticed that on any of the other pics I've seen of the 5th gens.

harper7
03-15-2010, 06:34 PM
That's because the SR5/Limited bumpers are 5-6 inches lower in the front and back. The guy with the Trail pics and 20's took his off already along with his mudflaps if you look at his pics from a couple of days ago.

OK , Mine are coming off too! Toyota has to know that is the first thing that would get ripped off offroad.

If it isn't vital to the engine or tranny performance, you could always drill out the rivets and remove it.

I know, I could take it off in less then 5 minutes, I just had half the truck apart already, I even had to change out the inner fender wells as they are different on the TE's.That was a pain!....but that's just it.Who knows if it's vital.
They put it there for some wierd reason. If you look behind where it's at on the black trail pic where he took his off already, there is a sharp cutoff that could get caught on a rock easily. Maybe it's Toyota's idea of a cheap skid!!They definitely need a vented skid up front on these 5th's.

Ludedude
03-15-2010, 06:55 PM
4th gens have a vented skid as well, but not a scoop looking thing you could suck a small child into :jester:

Bad Arse! By far the best 5th Gen I've seen yet. Been following your progress over on "the other forum"; glad you got some pics up over here.

As far as the trail rocker panels go, you still think its a no go to "massage" them to fit with the standard limited/SR5 trim? :deadhorse

If not, I'm thinking that I might just ditch them all together as the pic you posted with them removed didn't look half bad; especially if you had a set of sliders on there.

You mentioned you used the Toytec spacers up front. What about in the back?

What antenna is that? Any close-up pictures? It's a 14 inch "Antenna X" made out of billet stainless that was powdercoated black. http://www.antennax.com/p-4176-billet-style-14-antenna.aspx
I can't recommend it because it "whistles" above 60mph.Real high pitch but not too loud/bad.Only hear it with the radio off.Scares the deer away and calls all the dogs. :jester: Good reception and doesn't hit the garage door. I have a powered "hidden antenna" that I'm going to hook up and hide under the plastic windshield wiper cowling when I change to a Pioneer Nav.. Going to remove antenna base and shave or plug that hole .Fender needs to come off to do that right.

The TE rocker moulding doesn't tie into the SR5/Limited wheel flares. The flares/mudflaps are different. They would look better then no rockers at all though as it would clean up inside the doors. Here are the part numbers 75805-35130 and 75806-35100.Cheapest to buy OEM parts here .http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214074

You mentioned you used the Toytec spacers up front. What about in the back? Back is stock.I just put 1 inch Toytec aluminum spacers that I painted flat black on top of the front springs. Toytec calls it a 2 inch lift but I actually got a 1 3/4 inch lift. All spacer lifts for 4th Gen work as far as I know. The rake now is 1/4 inch front low. I get 37 1/4" rear fender lip center to ground and 37" front lip to ground. It was a PITA compressing the springs because I have XREAS and worked in the wheel well without disconnecting the XREAS hydraulic lines.

Is this the one you have.Friends who build custom rods use these.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HFM-HAB/
You have to have it under plastic as metal will block the signal.Once they make and I get a Gobi Stealth rack it will probably go on top behind the wind deflector.Run the antenna lead with the light wiring.
There are a couple different ones out there and some are junk.

The 31 inch antenna that comes stock HAS unbelievable reception but hits my garage .Maybe modify my garage opening!!One guy had a good point , once you get a rack and are lifted it will be a good judging point for your clearance in low hanging places ,like parking garages. As in you can see your antenna and know how much higher or lower your rack is.

Mine looks almost identical to that one, but I don't remember specific brand. Yes, mine is on the back of my front bumper cover, which is plastic, and I get the same reception as if I had no antennae.

I'll check it out and let you know when I get my new Nav in a couple of months. Waiting for Metra to get the 2010 4Runner bezel for aftermarket Navs. They have it in the works and said 6-8 weeks. The stock factory Nav/Stereo unit is a joke and wouldn't recommend getting that option to anybody.

Beautiful Saleen BTW! What did you end up using for an antenna then as I see you have a Cobra antenna delete plate ? or did you just live with it.

I finally got my new tires and rims yesterday. 305/65/17 BFG MT KM2's on 17x8 AR Teflon Mojave rims.
CO's and UCA's are next when I figure out which ones to get next week. Patiently waiting on Shrockworks sliders that have been paid for and on order for 2 months when he announced them.

Here are some pics of the new shoes and some interior pics too.Limited with black leather interior.

Those wheels and tires look great, that's what it takes to transform a mall crawler into a rock crawler. I'm curious why you didn't get black floor mats, though? Seems they'd match the interior better. I'd also suggest some mats for the rear seat. Nice truck!

I already found 2 dead armadillos and a rabbit in there!Roadkill stew... maybe I should keep it!:rotflmao:

Keep the Armadillos, but ditch the scoop! :)

Love the look, absolutely love it and that's how the real TE should look. I also love the choice of grey Weathertech's to carry out the alternate black / silver theme. I understand the TE concept would be you keep the mirrors black to avoid scratches. However it looks very cheap that way in my opinion. harper's mirrors withe the matching paint and blinker light look way, waaaay better. Besides if things get tight you can always pull your mirror in for God's sake.

Wonder what those mirrors would cost from Toyota for aftermarket install....just one arm or both an arm and a leg? :rotflmao::rotflmao:

Edit: Forgot to ask harper, what do you think of the noise level from those sweeeet looking tires on the street?? I've gotten a couple of tire guys trying to steer me to that set, but have some noice concern. The only time I've seen them in action was on a full sized Chevy PU that took off from a parking place right next to me then went down to the dead end and turned around rumbling down the street pretty good. I had a set of the former model BFG muds, and remember them being pretty moderate street noise wise.

Didn't go with the black floormats because the black on the floor shows all the dirt. Seems 95% of all dirt is light colored and doesn't show up on the gray.I had OEM black mats in it.A little contrast was needed too as the headliner is the same color gray .
Weathertech won't have the 2nd row mats for sale til next month.I have them on order. Still in design stage.

They are pretty noisy on the highway above 60mph. Not too bad.I can live with and hum along to their sweet song or just turn up the stereo.

I hav'nt had it offroad since Friday when I had them put on. Shouldn't be a problem as they are actually smaller in circumference then 285's. I'm in the market for CO's to give more clearance.

Hey Ryan..... I have very little time.I'm getting it ready as I have 5 weeks off for vacation starting July 1st. Right now I work about 50 hours a week as a mechanic at American Airlines plus I own a laptop repair business(reloading a couple of laptops now) that takes up all my free time. That and my 2 daughters and GF.

In July .I'm driving back home to Pittsburgh for the family reunion and wheel the local mountain trails where I grew up and then heading west to Yellowstone and then down thru Colorado to Moab. She'll get plenty dirty then.

Pin in?? That's Icon anti rotation rod that is welded on to the piggy. I had holes there so I just zip tied it instead of drilling a new hole for the hose clamp.

I have a Limited. They didn't come with KDSS , just X-Reas ,which I removed.

Who told you they had problems with the KDSS on the Trail Ed.'s. I've talked to Jeremy at Icon a dozen times. I hav'nt heard anything about KDSS problems and a bunch of them are lifted now. One guys running one with the Icon stage 4 and no problems.Several with ToyTec Ultimates too.

That ARB Sidewinder tray does look really sweet.I'm probably going to just fab my own battery tray and power steering relocate bracket out of stainless. Pretty straight forward sheet metal 101 work and I'm ordering the factory clamp and tie down rods as they are less then $15 . I ordered a 1315-200 Surepower battery separator already. I have alot of wiring to do as I still need to wire up my ViAir compressor and tank. May get started on that tonight as I needed the air comp. already. I'm pretty slow at wiring!!

hey harper do u think u could get a pic of your truck with something next to it to gauge the height of the lift combined with the tires?

Next to something? The front fenders in center above the wheel stands 39 inches and the rears are at 40 inches . The lowest point underneath is the rear diff at 10 3/4". The next lowest point is the two frame support crossmembers at the tranny and it's 12 3/4 with the gas tank skid at 13 1/2 inches.

And to answer your other question before about 35's. Gonna stick with 33's for at least the first couple of years.:guns:
