I picked up the Hanna sliders that Life in 4Lo was selling and they look well made. I was looking at where to drop the U bolts on the frame the other night and am not quite sure. I have the sport with X-REAS and there are plastic clips that hold the tubing to the frame.

This is of the rear U bolt. It is near the brake lines on top of the frame. I believe the bolt should be forward of this clip (to the left).

I was wondering how far forward does this bolt go in front of this clip (the front bolt of the slider)?

All the photos are on the driver’s side.
I was wondering if someone could take a look at where these U bolts are in relation to these clips on your frame and give me a quick measurment? I would like to get them lined up correctly the first time.

Let me try to dig up the instructions that Ken made. the rr mount goes right in front of the rear control arm mount- that will tell you where the front goes- and you will need to pop the xreas line out of the clip and slip the u-bolt underneath.
I'll try to find the instructions tho and PM you

One thing I know to watch for is to make sure the U bolts go under the brake lines on the driver side. The brake lines are on top of the frame at the rear. I'll see if I have some pix I can mail to you.
John, I just emailed you the instructions Ken sent me. They bascially will only fit in one spot as I remember. Too far forward the u-bolt would be too wide for the holes. Too far back and the rear door rubs.

Joel thanks for the instructions. I see I need to remove the plastic X-REAS clips from the frame.
Andries also thank you for the pictures. I was close to the correct position just need to removes the x-reas clips.
I can't wait to get them installed this weekend. Again thanks for everyone's help.

I installed the sliders on Sunday and they look good. Just a few notes for anyone reinstalling their sliders.
1. The U bolts may be out of shape. The ones I have were both wider at the opening and a couple were twisted. The opening end was anywhere from 3/16” to 3/8” larger then the bent end. Since the tolerances between the U bolts and the frame are tight this needs to be corrected. I needed to use a large 6” vice to squeeze them back to size checking with the holes on the mounting brackets for an exact fit.
2. If the sliders have seen any use over rocks then the end of the U bolts may be damaged. I found that on 2 of the ends the nut could only go on more then a couple of threads. To correct this I needed to run a ½”-20 die down the threads.
3. I also had a little buildup of metal possible from the welding of the rear control arm bracket that was exactly were the U bolt wanted to go. This of course was on the rear driver's side against the gas tank with almost no access. This caused the bolt to open and not fit the bracket. Finally after placing a block of wood between the U bolt and the floor board, a slight bend to 1 end of the U bolt, and gentle taps from the 6lb hammer everything slid together nicely.
Well working by myself the passenger side install took about ½ hour :D from start to finish but because of the metal on the frame I fought for more then 2 hours on the driver’s side.

Cool post some pics.
I remember when I spoke to Ken he said that the bolts need to bend after each application. Hopefully the rest of the process will be easier, if I take mine off for some painting. Maybe I will just touch up the paint while they are still on the 4R.

I was thinking the same thing. At first I just wanted to do a quick test fit, remove them and touch up the finish. After the installation now I think I will just touch them up while on the truck.
I think the u bolts get distorted after being torqued down. And then after undoing the nuts and removing the sliders they can spring to their new shape.

ah sorry John, didn't think they would be a hassle to put on. The bolts unscrewed easy enough... actually I think Henry helped me that day carry them into the shed.
Anyway doesn't sound like it put you out too much. Call me next time, I'll help you wrench! :bigok:

James no problem I was not complaining at all. I am just trying to participate on this board a bit more and was just relaying my experiences for others. It gave me an excuse to pick up a few new tools that I didn’t have yet.
Oh by the way the 4 Runner goes to Four X Doctor this Friday for a little part installation. I installed the compressor and switches last week and everything worked out great.

They are probably like, "Dang, didn't we just do this truck?!"
John, did you think of putting it in your truck? That might be more useful application in your situation where you have a built PU and stockish SUV.

That was the original plan a stock 4runner and a built up p/up. Then you had to go and sell the parts from yours and I could not pass them up.:D
I am having a tough time deciding on which vehicle to install it in. The p/up already has a truetrac in the rear which is not as good as the ARB but much better then open. The wiring and switches from you are perfect for the 4Runner (and already installed and working). I have never really given the ATRAC in the 4runner a good workout so I am not sure what it can do. But I did see all of them out at Anza Borrego (Andries, Mark, James, Joel etc) and their 4runners did much better then my pick up in most places (I did have better ground clearance). I really would like some sort of front locker for the p/up but I am sure I would just start breaking parts then.
Decisions decisions I have till Friday to decide. If I do put it in the p/up I will leave the switches and compressor in the 4runner. I will then pick up one of ARB’s new little compressors that will only run the lockers (or ???). :confused1

I would like to evidently get a co2 tank for airing up the tires. :cool1:

I see your dilemma...
The ATRAC really is very good. It is harder to justify the ARB in a stock rig where you will not be as likely to get into locker-worthy situations but is, imo, necessary step to a nicely built rig.
You will probably, in all honesty, get more use out of it in your PU tho. You can run a cheap compressor since it will only run the locker... or a nice hi-capacity one so you can double up for airing up duty (even if you get CO2, it's nice to have backup- the ARB compressor you have will handle this as well, as many do use it in that way).
Depending on if/when you want to build up the 4Runner... how difficult a trail you intend to use it on, etc should help determine your use.
Not to confuse you more but you can always reschedule w/ 4xDoctor. It's not a big deal and they are cool with it. I think the wait is usually a week or two?
