While this is only a cosmetic item, I'm wondering if you could fit an 06-07 bumper cover on an 05.

I think I'm going to upgrade to the 06 L.E.D. Tail Lights, so my stock lower reflector/turn-signal will be obsolete. Plus the plastic has seen better days!

The noticeable difference is that the 05 consists of about 4 pieces, where the 06-07 is just 1 (not counting the mounts and hardware).

I'm not sure if the fit is identical but I may be able to find out next week. I think were going to put the prototype on Chiplee's truck so I can use mine for mock up for yours and the other new carriers. I have another brand new bumper cover so I'll see if it fits on his when we start to mount his up.

I think a test fit will be in order. Also measure the distance fromt he tail lights to the bumper, etc to see if it flows at the same height.

The mounting pieces on the side from the diagrams look different, which can complicate your life.

So I'm assuming that Chiplee's 4Runner is a 03-05 version??? It would be great if you could do that fitting.

Here's what I found with a little more research...

The rear quarter panel is the same for the 04-07. So for these years the side brackets on the rear bumper cover should work, as long as you buy the new hardware. I'm not sure how different the 03 is from the others.

However..., the rear cross-member is different for the 03-05 and the 06-07. i can't tell by the parts diagram, because the same drawing is used for both, but they are different part numbers. This would be where the problem is. Is it just different holes for hardware, or is it shaped differently???

OFF TOPIC: Dave, hopefully your prototype rear tire carrier will fit on Chiplee's 4Runner. I can't imagine it being that different!?!?

Chip's is an 04' or 05', can't remember for sure. We're going to try next week to make it fit by removing just the middle section and modifying the mounts to attach closer to the middle. Not sure if it will be strong enough that way but we'll see. If need be, we can add supports back out towards the ends again.

I'll probably go that route, when I get your carrier. So for me, 3-4 mounts still sounds like the best. If for some reason the bumper cover doesn't work, I'll just have to figure out some way to make the 03-05 cover work.

I have 06 tails on my 05. They are identical as of the dimensions.

I'm doing "that" mod in the morning, but the question at hand is whether the rear bumper cover from the 06-07 will fit the 04-05. It is highly doubtful that anyone has tried this. Unless that is what you meant?!?!?!

...just verifying...

I went by Chip's last night to look at his bumper. It doesn't look to me like the 06' will fit, it's also very noticably different on the sides where it meets the stock fender flare.

We are however going to still try to make the mounts for the carrier fit by only modifying the center piece. I'm confident it will be plenty strong, it's just whether or not the tire carrier will flex more than i'd like or vibrate at all. We'll see.

If it's not solid enough, we'll go back to putting the outside mounts further out towards the sides.
