View Full Version : Engine doesn't start on first try every time...

I have about 3000 miles on my vehicle since I had a major service (60,000) completed. The only mechanical thing I've done since is having a Magnaflow muffler installed. Up until this point the engine would start on the first turn of the key every time. Now, every once in while, after the vehicle has been sitting for a few hours, it takes two tries at starting before it begins running smoothly.
:poke:
Have any of you guys had similar problems after installing a Magnaflow muffler? It makes some since to me, that a smaller muffler, while increasing horse-power, may restrict the engine some. I'm talking out of my ass here... :moon: Just a thought?!?!

No, no problem with Magnaflow. Your not restircting the engine by providing a freer flowing exhaust.
Maybe you need new plugs. I changed mine at 60,000 (a few months ago) and feel it runs a little smoother. certainly the plugs were getting to the end of their lives. While buring at the righ color, the electrodes were worn down.

I have the same MagnaFlow system and no problems, as it's basically free flowing.
But, I never hold the key to start it. You only need to hold the key for like 100th of a second or something like that.
Our trucks have a self starting feature, that will engage the starter motor, and keeps it on until the engine starts. It was originally designed for cold weather starts, and to reduce emissions when it does start.
It does that by only squirting gas into the cylinders once, therefore, less emissions VS every time you crank the key, you're adding fuel each time therefore more emissions because there's more fuel to burn off.
Some people know about it, most don't, because their salesperson never told them about it.
And that's My :2cents :2cents :2cents :2cents :2cents :2cents :2cents
But I don't know if that actually answered your question or not, if not, at least now you know about a cool feature!!!
You can always ask Brett too!!!:guns: :wavey:

I do the same thing. I just quickly turn the key. It's pretty much the same as a push button starter. However now it sometimes doesn't turn-over on the first attempt. It will gurgle, and then stop. [Sorry for the CarTalk like description]. Then it starts right up on the second try.

The Magnaflow idea was just a theory, because I didn't want to blame my weld on sliders for my engine problems.

Ultimately the obvious would be to take it back to the dealer and complain about the poor starting which you've had pretty much since you got it back from the 60,000 service. And yes, new plugs are supposed to be done at 60,000 but I'd pull a few to see if they were changed. I imagine your invoice should show the plugs too.
