I just found this over on YT. V8 4Runner Group Buy (http://yotatech.com/showthread.php?p=759399#post759399). This guy is apparently looking to get a group buy going. Sounds interesting albeit expen$ive.

I'd really like to hear how it sounds first, tho.

EDIT: Ooops. Maybe needs to be moved to the Vendor area?

To be honest, I will not touch that guys idea. Taking out CATs and fooling the ECU, etc is just looking for long term trouble and failing SMOG. I think the V8s are poor candidates for proper headers due to the wide (90 degree block) and relatively small engine bay. The V6 is a far better candidate for headers.

On the pre VVTi V8s you have 3 CATs, 2 (one by each header outflow) and a 3rd where the 2 pipes come together. This 3rd one, especially the part where they have the 2 pipes coming in is probably a far bigger restriction than the headers are. You will notice VVTi engines, both V6 and V8 have 4 cats (2 on each bank) adn then the 2 pipes come together in a far more elegant fashion.

If you want to add some pep to your V8 I would recommend looking at replacing the 3rd cat with a 2 into 1 highflow cat. I might be looking at that in the next month or 2. This will give you more improvement that just headers, adn you dont have to deal with any of the sensors, as they are all located before the 3rd cat.

Just my 2c.

Excellent points. My main belief in Toyota is the reliability, and I wouldn't want to screw with anything that could compromise that. And, for me anyways, the V8 has enough power to make me smile alot.

it also seems like headers are a big bite out of the wallet for an extra 10-15hp (if that).

You know an alternative might be the Unichip. It gives some gains- maybe the real gain is better driveability. It is an AUS item and the 120Prado guys seem to rave about it.

It is pricey but not more than those headers.

I would be reluctant to mess with the plumbing too much. It always seems to cause issues down the line. It's never a "bolt on and forget about it" affair. I'm not sure the V8 (or V6) can make large gains as they are very efficient to begin with.

I was tempted by headers for the V6 but there were some drawbacks (i forget the specifics now) that I felt not worth persuing it. Maybe fine for others.

just looking at my 05 v8, it would be a nighmare to change them. Also, my truck is loud enough with a Magnaflow muffler.
