-20C this morning. When I started the truck, no problems starting, but for a split second, there was this awful grinding noise. Sounded a little like when you try cranking over your starter with the engine running. Anyone else ever get this? I didn’t plug the truck in, but I am running 0W30 synthetic oil.

I was thinking maybe the starter was a bit slow in disengaging due to the cold weather? Something I should look into?

Thanks!

I had strange whistling this morning as well, but it was more like an old belt sounds from power steering when you turning the wheels (my truck was standing still on the driveway). After 10 second it disappears. All the way to the work I was wondering as well what it was. May be it's just our cold weather in Canada.

Now that I'm in colorado, I can actually test cold weather starts. I've noticed that it makes some unusual noises when the temp is below 20 degrees F.

They might have temperature below 0 as well in the mountains. We're much north from them, so it's normal for us -35C (-31F). :)

I heard something yesterday as well at about 25F starting ....sounded more like a little belt squeal though. like yours it went away after about 5 or 10 seconds or so

Yep, that the sound I had. Have you been able to find out where did it come from? At the time I open the hood, it disappeared.

nope ...same thing. It may just be time to change the belt soon. I used to have a Yukon and I had to change the belt every year once it started to get cold.

V6 has a timing chain. Does V8 has chain as well? What belt can give the sound like that if it's not a timing belt?

Probably the serpentine belt. V8 has a timing belt, which requires replacement every 6 years or 90K miles. Guys wiht the V8 LC and Tundras have run th ebelts for much longer without issue (not recommended though).

I'd be willing to bet money mine was the serpentine ....very highly unlikely it was the timing belt.

What about V6? Does it has the same belt?

V6 also has a serpentine belt, but a timingchain. There has been a number of reports about issues with the pulleys on the serpentine belt of the V6 though. SO if it is a V6 it might be a poorly aligned or failing pulley on the serpentine belt.

The V6 got a chain? odd, my 3.4L has a belt. Anyways back on topic, do any of you negative degree people have dual batteries or block heaters?

Block heaters are required by law in my province (Alberta) on all new vehicles . . . .

But

WHAT ABOUT *MY* PROBLEM? (This thread has been hijacked)

*My* noise lasts less than a second, and is not at all like a belt-tyoe noise . . . Any ideas ? . . . ya know considering I *was* the Original Poster and all . .. . :D  :poke:

The starter might not be dis-engaging or popping back into itself in time due to the temps. I've heard of this happening with starters on honda civics but never toyotas.

Hmm, assuming this is the cause . . . . Serious problem or mere annoyance?

I'm pretty convinced that the day I bring the truck into the dealer and leave it overnight to see if they can hear the noise, we will get a heat wave and/or the truck will start fine :D

How difficult to change the serpentine belt? What about pulley? How difficult to align it an/or change?

Serpentine should be pretty easy as you just loosen the tensioner pulley and pull off the belt. SLide it over the fan and out. Make sure to take note of the routing of the belt through the pulleys whne you install the new one (normalla sticker on the insde of the hood showing it too).

Dunno on the pulleys though, should be able to jusy loosen the bolts and remove and then replace or add spacers. You will need to look for the TSB and see the instructions.
