Right Indeed!
Sort of a ghost town these days.
Lots of dead and dying palm trees.
One funny thing about the photo - the truck is totally photo shopped, but those palm trees on the right are not at all... and they look so fake!
-Mike
Yes!!!!! What did I win?! :wavey:
I know that those Palm trees are there, I've seen them three years in a row.
Is you 4Runner there, or did you chop that into the photo??
My 4Runner is there... I just upgraded it with photoshop.
Took a trip to Arizona, and stopped to shoot a few photos.

Give me you personal comments/thought/ideas guys. I need to commit to the specifics asap.
I'd go with central loop. Looks more proportional for daily driver. For Off-Roading three loops better, but for mostly Daily Driving and Expeditions single loop is looks better. My personal opinion, as you asked. I'm personally, going with central loop only.

I posted this to t4r.org:
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18705&highlight=approach+angle
If you picture a triangle, you can get a 'result'. You know 1 angle is 90'...you know 2/3 lengths of the sides, and away you go! ( I know I wish I paid better attention ). A brief google brings up a better explanation:
http://id.mind.net/~zona/mmts/trigonometryRealms/introduction/rightTriangle/trigRightTriangle.html
Relevant portion of previous post:
Ok, if I recall high school, sin cos and tan were not my friends...however, I think approach and departure angles could be calculated with a lift kit. My measurements were crude...rear hitch, and front center of bumper where it starts to "curve". For lengths, I just stuck the tape measure under the tire w/o forcing it:
Post Spacer measurements:
Front driver 36 ½
Front Pass 36 ¾
Rear D/P 37 ¾
Rear Diff 9 ¾
Front Center 11 ½
Rear Hitch 17 ¼
Rear tire tread to rear hitch 37 ¼
Angle Departure: 24.85 (stock 24)
Front tire to front bumper 29
Front bumper height 21 ½
Angle Approach: 36.5 (stock 30)
I may have completely screwed up those approaches and departures do they make any sense?

I'll have lighting and winch pricing posted early next week. I had to get the 9500 winch w/ synth rope and detached solenoid specially made for us, but Ramsey has agreed to do it. I'm supposed to have pricing on it Monday.
ok - its way past monday --any more news?

Hey guys, I was looking at the prototype pics and a few observations:
--the approach angle is really great.
--winch mounting- again, the short overhang lets the winch be tucked in. keeping the weight as close to the axle is good. Esp. weight hanging off the front. It's also a clean look w/ just a nice Hawse on the front- w/ a black one, you will be really stealthy.
-- recovery points up high - again, pay dividends in clearance & easy access
-- light mounting- recessed is ok, I like flush mounting but that's JMO. ARB does the same thing w/ deep recesses but even more so.
--since this is a made-to-order bumper, you might as well take advantage of it; ie, additional mounting tabs welded to the hoops, hidden mounting points for XX accessory, etc

Does the bumper mount to the endcaps of the 4runner like the previous gens and tacomas? If so you guys might want to look at this.

Nick, this might be a stupid question, but here it goes. What the hell does the weather have to do with taking some pictures?  Like I said, might be a stupid question, but I don't think so, and here's why.
1: you have a shop, I'm sure that there might be just enough room to squeeze at least the front end of the 4Runner inside to shoot a photo out of the rain.
2: your camera more than likely has a flash on it, so you don't need the sun for light.
Now, it might not be up to your artistic standards, but I think that we can live without a perfect portrait of a bumper.
Would you please send us something? :jester: :moon:

Robert, why are you confused (emoticon) about the delivery date? They said 4 weeks from 08/02/06 (check back thoriugh this thread - I think about 3 pages back) You still have a few weeks to wait. Don't piss them off by asking every week when are they coming. If they come earlier it will be a bonus and you can celebrate but honestly its getting a bit annoying asking every week for something else photos, delivery whatever.
Personally I think if you really need something from them at this stage ring them.

Probably another one of my dumb questions, but would it be valuable to list (consolidate) all the options on either this thread, the access. thread, or another brand new thread? I wonder if everyone knows what options are available and what others are considering or have negotiated.
For instance...
Powdercoating color
No hoop
Center hoop
Center hoop and side hoops
Antenna mounts (either tabs welded to hoop or hole/s drilled into top of flat bar)
Holes for mounting driving lights on top of bar
Tie down for fluffy dice (are you paying attention!)
Additional tow hooks?
Winches, ropes, hawse, remotes, driving/fog lights etc (posted in other thread)
Do you get what I mean? Have I left anything out? Is anyoner ordering anything else outside of these items that might be of use to others? Does or has Shrockworks offer/ed any other custom fab work or accessories on other vehicles that we might use on our bullbars?

Christ.... I'm so confused. Each time I read your standard and options list I seem to misunderstand.
In the options list you make mention of grey powder coating. Why only grey? I thought we could order other colors although they may not be exact matches for the Toyota color.
The way I read it presently, the standard color is black, with an option to pay additional for grey.
I have been asking for (in this forum, via email, and pm) for white and I understood this was an option that I'd need to pay slightly more for but was an option nontheless. Is this option no longer available?

The fogs in the Proto seemed really bright, especially for a fog light. You may loose a little light with the recess, but they will still be way brighter than the stock lights.
On the top lights, I like the white lights (520 SMR) for a long range light, but it's just personal preference really. A lot of people like the Blue-Gold lense reflections of the ion crystal during the day. It does look pretty cool.
From a function standpoint, all the Formula 1 race cars seem to run amber Ion crystal color lights and the Baja guys seem to run white or bluish HID....

For now I'm considering the white as more of a custom / special order thing rather than a std option, but I will do it for those who already requested it.
"Fairly close" is the best match I can promise though. If you think you might qualify as somewhat anal about the color match, get it painted to an exact match with automotive paint by a body shop.

Has anyone actually bothered to contact their insurance yet to discover if there are going to be any issues? I think I will sound out mine (AAA) tomorrow.
Never heard of any. We actually send a LOT of bumpers to body shops that are paid for by insurance companies. People trash the stock plastic-fantastic stuff in a wreck, and replace it with a real bumper. Insurance companies dont seem to have a problem with it. See if you can get someone to hit you! :D

I've been thinking about that for my rear bumper. I would *never* commit insurance fraud, but if I DID happen to get rear ended, I'd have my insurance company send me directly to Demello's. No offense to you Shrockworks, just I doubt my insurance would pay for it to be towed to another state.
Get rear ended, maybe dent the rear quarter panels... um well, I think I should replace w/ DOM tubing and fiberglass... yumm.

AAA told me my policy would not be voided by the addition of the bullbar but could not be added as additional equipment (loss of bullbar would not be covered in an accident).
A winch can be added as additional equipment. For a $850 winch the premium would increase by $24 per yr.
I also found out I am eligible for a Professionals Discount Program which gives me a 10% discount on my premiums. Glad I rang! :)

How much space is there from the light mounting holes up to the bottom of the center bar? And are the holes forward, under, or behind the center of the bar any? What about side to side spacing of the holes in realtion to each other and to the sides of the center bar? Trying to see what size lights will fit in under the hoops, or to do without the hoops.
Thank you,

I think the issue with upper lights will be the distance from the hood when it's opening.

Hmmm... I never called myself in, but I my friend did. He has 3rd Gen. After calling the insurance company and telling them that he has winch bumper + winch + 2" suspension lift his insurance premium jump up 35%.

It depends on the company and how they write their policies. USAA will cover the bumper/sliders for a small increase (less than $10 a month) but they get really touchy on motorcycle exhausts.

Alex,
Each insurance company and I expect each state/country will have its variations. I am only reporting on my insurance company in SoCal. YMV
The PDP again applies to my insurance. If you are a scientist (my wife), educator (me), medical pract. or engineer they offer a discount on prem.s.
You just need to submit documents (eg PhD certificate and MEd. certificate in my families case) to get the discount.

I think the issue with upper lights will be the distance from the hood when it's opening.
Hence my question about relation of the bar to the light holes. Since the hood clears the bar, if we know where the holes are in relation to the bar, we can determine if certain models of lights extend back into the space needed to open the hood.

Is a second battery and/or upgraded alternator required for the winches?
shrockworks
08-15-2006, 02:05 PM
The holes are about 1.5" on center from the front edge of the bumper. The holes are 9/16" diameter, so you may be able to push the lights fwd a bit inthe hole with and M10 or 3/8" stud light. The tube is 2" and the center of it is about 1.5" from the edge also.
Hella 500's cleared for the pics. The PIAA 520's dont come back very far, so they should be OK. We will test the PIAA 520's.

Is a second battery and/or upgraded alternator required for the winches?
A larger alternator is not required. Even a second battery is not required but it is a very good idea. I ran a Warn 8000 LB winch on my last 4Runner for years with just the primary battery. You just have to be careful not to run down your only battery when out in the booneys.
This time I plan to install a second battery to attach the winch. That way you have additional battery power avail for the winch but you also have a great back up battery in the event your primary battery fails.

I have never found this to be necessary. Even winching 3 people in a row up a hill with a Sammi with a 55A alternator and a puny battery.
Longs pulls in mud could make for different results, but I avoid that stuff. :D

I like the swept forward main hoop. Nice touch. Don't dig those tabs on the side for the cables tho. - I guess that was a custom request tho.
The PIAA lights on top of the bullbar look tiny. I hope some Lightforce's work in that space. Also hope there is room to set the lights back a bit more. I guess because of the way the engine hood opens, maybe not.
I note that the sides of the bumper don't match up with the lines of the fender (not quite long enough) which is a shame, but again I guess it's function over form. The ARB one does line up but I imagine there is a loss in approach angle or maybe wheel clearance.

question: how do you grab the winch clutch lever? Thru the squareish holes under the hawse?
Mark: I remember reading a Taco owner saying he had to cut the wings of the ARB bumper to clear 285 MT's.
Not ideal, but photos tend to exaggerate the effect - more than reality.

prototype #2 is about 2" longer. But now seeing an 06 in person the fender flairs are larger. On the lights the 05 guys are going to have more room than the 06. The 06 grill sticks out about 1" from the 05.
The tabs on the lifted truck for the cables to the roof rack were a customer option....if you request it, realize that the cables would have to be taken off each time you open the hood...that or get a wider rack on top.

Very easy. I've done it last Friday.
1. Remove the plastic trim piece around the headlights and radiator.
2. Take off the lower grille portion. It's attached to the bumper. Be careful with clips. Use a flat screwdriver, remove from one side to the center by unplugging front and rear clips at the same time.
3. Take all bolts from the bottom of the bumper off.
4. Remove the bolts front the fender well which holds the bumper.
5. Unplug the DRL/Turn signals and Fog lights.
6. Slide the bumper off the frame. It may need a little push.
7. As soon as you removed the plastic portion, just unscrew the bolts which holding the frame element of the front bumper and take it off.
8. For aftermarket bumper installation, remove two holding pieces on the sides of the front fenders. They are located right beside the headlight and lower then front of the fender.
9. Now you have your bumper off the vehicle. ;)
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask :rotflmao:

Alex,
How long did this take you?
It shouldn't take too long. Once you've done it one time, it's pretty easy to do it again ... the difficult part the first time is just finding all the tabs and such.
ksneubec
08-31-2006, 07:43 PM
Thanks Alex! Any photos?

Normally they face inwards so if your leaning over the bullbar to work in the engine bay area your not stabbing yourself. Likewise just a safety issue working around the truck (washing) - avoid parts that poke outwards. Also visually keeping lines clean. Damn!
In oz all my bullbars had the tabs facing inwards.

I already e-mailed you back and am waiting for Jim to get in to try and resolve this. The the hood opening is VERY close, and we tried to put it where you requested as much as possible, which was "as close to the center hoop as poss on the outer tube" told to me. The grill stays on the body in that pic, not the case on these 4runners, it's been a PITA in many ways.

Yeah well thanks for looking at it. I was expecting the tabs would be welded on as close to the centre hops as possible - probably near the inside edge of the headlight where there is no hood clearance issues.
Oh well :(
The bar is already in for powdercoating so too late now. I guess I'll just have to grind it off when I eventually have it powdercoated again.
Thanks for your quick response.
For anyone else, Jim told via via phone today that shipment should be 1.5 weeks - one week for powdercoating and a few days for packaging before shipment.

Maybe I missed something in your posts, but I don't get why having them on the outside does anything to effect the install of your antennas? I'm sure they do, because you seemed pretty bummed, but could you explain it a little bit more.

Yeah, but like they said, the bumper and hoops are so close to the hood/body that it would've been very difficult to have them facing inward ...

When we get the bullbars, I think you will see that the hood clearance issue relates to the centre hoop. Near the headlights this is not an issue. Anywhere around the headlight area of the side hoops the tabs should fit facing inwards without clearance issues.

I never said they would effect the instal of the antennas :guns:
I simply wanted the tabs facing inwards to avoid them sticking into me and others when working around the bullbar/engine bay area.
The antennas will work exactly the same with either the tabs facing inwards or outwards.

Actually, the pics of the bumpers on their way to PCing have the foward-angled hoops ... it's just slight enough that they appear to be straight up (but aren't) ... just have to look really closely ... ;)
EDIT: unless you're referring to the picture of the single bumper already installed.

Okay, this is the second or third post that gives me the sense of some misunderstanding or animosity toward the fact that I have the bumper --- look, any one of you guys could have had the bumper even before me, had you lived close enough to pick it up instead of having it shipped! I saw all of your bumpers in crates, wrapped carefully, and ready to go. The ONLY reason I have mine is because I drove 4 hours down there to pick it up since I was trying to save some money. If the shop were in California, all of you guys would have driven to get yours too and those of us in other states wouldn't yet have ours. It's not like I got some special early bumper here.
Also, you should be thankful that the bumper has been installed on a truck or two before being shipped to you. This way, any issues that came up with mine have been dealt with before you receive yours.
What "bad news" is it that you're referring to as far as what you've heard secondhand??

09-14-2006, 06:54 PM
Geez, over react Tracy!
Firstly my post isn't directed at you.
Secondly, look at the smilies - they're all crybaby smilies. They are not flaming hot heads and such.
Thirdly, bad news is such things as some bars being delayed due to waiting on parts. That might not be bad news to you, but it is to me.
There is no doubt we will all be grateful when the bars are on our trucks and we can use them for our intended uses. However, it has been a long haul in my mind (an opinion I believe I have a right to hold) from the initial germination of this project with my money being put up front from the outset. Its frustrating that I was told via a early post that notices were going out Thursday and I seem to have missed the boat. Its the same frustration I experienced believeing up until just last week that the bars were likely to be shipped early this week and now it appears not until next week given that I haven't recieved a notice. It might also be pointed out that the frustration is (again) experienced when you know some people have been notified of shipping but I have not. It's frustration but its not life or death and its nothing personal on anyone.
I could care less that you have yours, except its (again) frustrating to see these works of art on other people's trucks but not on mine. The same feeling I get when I see other trucks with better lifts, bigger tires yada yada.....
Honestly.........

Mark, I wasn't overreacting - I was addressing an issue to clear the air.
They want these to be perfect, so when they ran across a small problem on mine they wanted to be sure to get the necessary parts and have things set up so that the problem doesn't occur for anyone else. Maybe those are the "parts" that are causing delay, I don't know.
I can tell you that when you get yours, you'll feel better about the wait - these things are, like you said, works of art. Hope everyone sees theirs soon.

Nice work to ASOLO for leaving his truck so long and SW for a real nice product it seems- best on selling tons. Glad to see Tracy was a guniea pig and they ironed out any last details.
Nice, post more stuff Tracy! I want to see Mark get bent a little more...hehe, ;)

I sent Jim some more pictures, so I guess I'll let him decide what (if anything) he wants to post of them. :)

LOL. It's like watching your wife having sex with another man..."Hey that's mine! Give it back!" (not that I know what that's like tho :rotflmao: having your wife...well you get my point...I hope! )

I assure you we are full bore on these...just do like any wheeler does (myself incl.) and look at pics and dream about it while you wait....I have projects put together in my head that I haven't even begun to get the money to buy....that's worse than waiting on a paid product because it's in the process of coming your way. It seems to dull the passing of time..
If you were going to buy an ARB it still wouldn't be here (I know they are close), and you've only seen one bumper adapted to a 4runner. Atleast we have some veriety pics for you and some updates. I could be wrong but I don't think you'd be this involved and informed with a large co. like that. JMO
You will get your notices ASAP
thanks,
Nick

As I found out in the first few pages of this thread - humor does not come through on the internet too well.
Nick, we love ya man, thanks to you, Jim and the SW Team; we will have an amazing bumper on our trucks. I hope that it is a top seller and motivates Shrockworks to keep working with the 4th Gen community to provide a rear bumper, skids, muffler bearings, turn signal fluid, new air for my tires...a bolt-on fake blower for my hood. Ok, just the first two.
All kidding aside, I do look at the pictures of r0cky's truck about 5 times a day and smile (I think my boss may fire me because of it). I'll wait patiently as I know I'm getting the best and I appreciate the time and effort it took to make an excellent product.
I'll be doing this :tequila: this weekend to pass the time till the bumper arrives on Monday.
Have a great weekend everyone, now...

LOL. It's like watching your wife having sex with another man..."Hey that's mine! Give it back!"
:lol::lol::lol: That is hilarious. Thanks for the laugh on a really tough day! Glad to see the sense of humor in still in tact despite the waiting. I know it sucks!
The good news: Everyone here and I do mean EVERYONE is working to get these bumpers out today. I'm optimistic so far that it will happen.
The not so great, but not that bad news: Despite my best efforts to get
everything here at the same time....some of you will not be getting everything at once. Nothing major though though, so dont get too excited.
1 - We tweaked the blinker lights on the final design (see them on Tracy's pics). It looks really sweet, but the new light doesn't draw enough current to convince the flasher it isn't burnt out. We have a fix. The first group that went out does NOT have the fix included. The ones going out today will. Those of you from the first group (and Tracy) will receive it separately via FedEx. Pic of what the correct blinker wire looks like:

2 - Ramsey did not ship us the Wireless kits with the winches. They are drop shipping these to you today.
3 - Neubecker, Garland, Tomlinson - Your winches are shipping separately via FedEx and will arrive a couple days after the bumper.
4 - Some of you who ordered shackles will be getting those in a separate box.
5 - Rasmus, your 6" lights are coming separate w/ the shackles.
Thanks for everyone's patience. This was a logistical challenge for us. There are NO known problems with the bumper. I'm confident you guys will really like it!
