I am noob and looking to do some mods, when money permits. I am purchasing some Nitto Terra Grapplers, 265/70-17. What should be my next mod? I am looking at OME suspension or Hanna Sliders?
Thanks! mochoajr

What are you planning to do with your 4R, aslo which model do you have? How will it be used? Oh and what budget are you looking at?
This will help people to throw in some ideas in terms of mods you can do.

What BD said... :iagree
you may want the OME suspension to clear those slightly bigger tires. Then get the sliders ASAP if you anticipate being in any rocky areas.

Thanks guys. I can't do both at the same time, so I'll do the suspension first and get the sliders later.

Sounds like a plan. What 4R do you have? Do you have XREAS?

2004 SR5 V6, no XREAS.

Enjoy the modding process. OME makes a pretty good suspension for the price, you can check it out under the suspension section. I would however recommend that you maybe look at using 141 shocks in the rear instead of 142s, if you don't carry too much wieght offroad. The 141s should give a softer ride, but wont control a heavy load as well as the 142s offroad.

I have 2003 4R limited V8 Auto w/xreas. I would like to lift it up a little, get some larger tires-revos probably. But open to other ideas. I would like to improve off road capability and give it a little "tougher" look to it. I may have opportunity to spend some serious time in mountainous area, so I would really like to improve its off road capability for muddy fire roads, a little river crossing, diving through grassy unimproved hills and fields, etc. But I want to spend wisely and not totally alter the rig. I mean its a very nice vehicle. I would still like it to look nice enough to take a date to nice restaurant, but capable of serious off roading, too. It wouldn't have to me a rock climber or anything that crazy.
I got my 4R when they first came out in 2003. Always wanted 4R but they were always too underpowered for me. When V8 came out I bought!!
It was way cool for first year plus, there were hardly any on the road. I was beginning to think they weren't going to catch on, no one else liked the new style? Then all of a sudden mid 2004 to 2005, they were everywhere. Began seeing little old ladies driving 'em. Just annoyed me a little, ya know.
Would like some sort of replacement front bumper with grill guard and winch!!
I never really liked the way the nose sticks so far out in front. Maybe grill replacement. They look cool, but seem overly expensive for what you get.
Would like to add mp3 player adapter.
Would like to get rear cargo area protector. One that covers whole area behind front seat to tailgate with both rear seats folded flat. I have not found one that covers the whole area anywhere.
Advice appreciated on any of the above. Anything I missed that's worked well for others?
Thanks,
Reed

Welcome new 4th gen 4Runner owners!!! :moon:  :bigok:
You have definitely landed in the right forum. Check out the tires and suspension threads, you'll find a ton of great information. We also have a nice electronics thread section, that should help answer most of your questions as well. A lot of us are very active off road enthusiasts and are always doing something to our 4Runners. This forum is dedicated to you, and all of us that own the new Toyota 120 platform 4x4 vehicles.
Enjoy!!! :bigok:  :D

My recommendations for mods for any starter are: (Look under the suspension and tire section, as well as the offroad tech section)
Before you start modding get some basic gear for offroading:
Bare minimum list
- Recovery straps and shackles
- Small air compressor (MV50 is a good choice for cheap) or CO2 tank to fill tires. To air up after a trail.
- Tire pressure gauge to air down and up. Maybe get STuan deflaters to make it easier to air down.
- CD preferable with external antenna for going in groups. FRS is also a choice, but CBs are prefered for longer trips.
Then for the mod list. Start with these first.
1) Get a suspension lift, there are various options from spacers to coilovers and anything in between. Go to the suspension section to see what might suite you price/performance wise.
2) Get some tires. 265/70/17 seems to be a natural choice as it fits nicely and still fits as a spare too. ANy bigger wont fit in the stock spare location. AT tires are very popular Bridgestone Revos, BFG A/T KOs and lately Nitto Terragrapplers have been afvorites with people. FOr the more serious rockcrawlin folks the Good year MT/Rs have been a good choise as it still retains good on road manners.
3) Get sliders for your rockerpanel. Hanna makes some nice bolt on ones, but there are a number of other weldon options too. FOr those with the tools, you can make your own.
This will get you going to do some good offroading.
After this it gets more tricky as there are not a lot of options yet. Normally people will upgrade their skids and also cover the transmission, then lockers (maybe) and bumpers. Perhaps a winch too. Then maybe bigger tires and gears (try to combine with lockers).
All that said, you definitely will like a front bumper so see

Thanks for the info Bulldog. I should be getting my tires installed this week and then I'll go for the suspension, then the sliders last.
I definitely want to do some trails and maybe rocks, but nothing heavy duty. It's my daily driver.
I like the look of several of the 4Runners here.

Got my OME suspension installed on Thursday. I ordered from Slee and their kit came with the 142's. It feels allright. It'll help whenever I have people and a load in the back.

Congrats, enjoy it. personal preference plays a large role in suspension selection as well. Some people prefer a firmer suspension, while other do a softer suspension. AS long as you are happy with it and your choices, all's good.

wow, that was fast!
Post some pics of your ride and hope you keep going. After you get some tires on it, park next to a stock 4Runner and you will be shocked at the difference. :cool1:
