I remember going through there about 1/3 that fast and 4x as bumpy. Love to see that suspension in action!

Very cool video editing and filming for a lot of the scenes. What SW did you use and camera? (not that I have funds for either in my toys budget :mecry: ).

Hi bulldog - thanks for the great compliments folks. I used Sony Vegas Movie Studio, seems to get great reviews and is a lot easier and cheaper than Premiere.

Of course filling up with 3 tanks of gas that day cost the most... :2cents

Wow! great cinematography and production! Holy crap! how fast was Josh going? 80? Great soundtrack BTW.

Thanks very much Chris. Well, interesting question you ask. The big mystery is that I had reset the scangauge at Carl's Jr. in Barstow before we went out to the MDR course. Then that afternoon when we were done it showed a peak MPH of... 108 (!) Josh didn't think he had gone that fast, but we are stumped otherwise. Today I checked out the scangauge, resetting, etc and it was working just fine.

That's too funny... 108 mph. I was going to ask if he was going a 100 but thought that might be overkill. I guess I was wrong.
BTW, the way your truck was riding in the dirt, it looks like it's ready for Baja. Sponsors anyone?

Crap!!!  The fastest I've ever gone through there is around 60 mph!!
That's still pretty fast, but it sure would be fun @ 100+ mph!!! :cool1: :guns:

We'll be going through there in a couple weeks!! I can't wait!! :wavey: :guitar:

Gotta tell you guys our FJ trip with Crozhawk was the first time I really suffered 4Runner envy. And I was not alone. Tell me if you guys agree on this:

After 2 years of FJ ownership, I think the average FJ buyer will eventually migrate to a 4Runner. The visibility and door issues do not go away. You begin to crave real rear doors, real aerodynamics, more room and more power.

Toyota underestimated how hard FJ's would be wheeled. I do not know how the 4Runner is holding up on the trails but we are eating lots of 8" ring and pinions.

Also, I think your 4.7 is better than a blown, cat-back 4.0. In Death Valley Dave was right up there with me. Meaning a LOT faster than the stock FJ's. On 5-minute stretches I usually have to pull over and wait for 3 minutes while the others catch up. Except for Dave.

Do you guys feel that the 4Runner has all the capability of the FJ, even though it was not envisioned as a hardcore trail vehicle? What 4Runner tradeoffs are there?

As far as capability, they are very close to the same truck, with a different body (and obviously a few other things). Same suspension, axles, transfer case etc. One notable difference though is FJs seem to be able to nicely fit 35s where it's quite a chore on 4runners.

Joel the pics in your buildup thread are gorgeous. How did you locate those rear towers? I have not looked to see if that is posted around here.

I am about to have a custom LT 4-link done by Icon and we are scratching our heads about ways to locate the towers similarly to what you have done.

Here is a thread on the rear over here:

They were custom built by Samco Fabrication here in Reno. He's the man behind Team Hummer.

It would be nice to have a rear locker stock on the 4Runner, but to be honest, that might be why the FJ ones have died more than the 4Runner rears. The tacomas had the same problems with the stock locker. I also personally like the longer wheelbase of the 4Runner, it has gotten me up things that the shorter wheelbase would have made harder. On the other hand, the shorter wheelbase allows a stock FJ to go over a lot of obstacles that I could only do lifted. Keep in mind that at the last two FJ summit's, I was the only one on 33's who got up the wall on Poughkeepsie without winching. The only other guy who made it was an FJ with 35's and a locker. Love the wheelbase sometimes.

Lastly, the FJ having a place on the back door for a tire/rim is a big one for me. My spare tire is basically my bumper underneath my truck. I hit it all the time. For me to get it on the back on my rig I need to buy a rear bumper. Now granted, if you are planning of upgrading a 4Runner or FJ anyway, then it isn't a big deal.

You aren't honestly thinking about getting rid of the FJ are you? Unless you have someone willing to shell out 100k+ for it, would it be worth it?

Todd is far too modest. I for one can attest to how fast that thing is. Todd was pulling away easily with larger tires and possibly a heavier vehicle. That thing is simply a work of art!

Todd, it's funny you say that about the 4R's though, I'm almost just the opposite. I like the looks of the 4R (after some modification of course:cool1: ) but I think the shorter wheel base is a significant advantage over obstacles, along with the shape of the gas tank, etc....(among others). Maybe the new 09' runner with the rear locker might be an improvement. THey also need to offer a more utility friendly interior like the FJ.

A nice variety of Toyota's make for good discussion around the campfire though! :guitar:

I just think Toyota wa very smart to leverage the same platform for a number of applications.

At the large end the Prado and GX with pretty roomy cabins and interiors. The 4Runner and FJC with different focuses, but using the same underpinnings and then the Hilux and Taco pickup variants. Lots of choice and options for the market, abnd also leverage for after market components.

My ideal 120 vehicle would be a Prado (or stripped down GX) with the V8, but dual tank and rear tire carrier on the back door. That would provide tons of cargo and interior space with lots of fuel range. For really long trips a diesel version would be handy at the cost of performance.

Anyway will be nice to chat about around a campfire though.

Back to topic, still love that FJC (even though it's such s poser :flipoff: :jester: ) Would love to see how your rear suspension turns out, and if your new rear axle hold up to your abuse.

BTW I believe it is an AT, did you fit a torsen center diff on it? Should help with your offroad performance at high speed compared to just a part time case (just disable VSC).

The end of a legacy (http://www.race-dezert.com/cgi-bin/trader/atl.cgi?ct=4&md=second&id=7126)

I can't believe Todd is selling it now. He makes the video, finishes the rig, and now is selling it. I'm extremely sad.

Oh well, welcome to the 4Runner world Todd. We're happy to have you when you finally come over.

Yeah there is a discussion thread about it that Joel posted up.

Guess he has a new project.
