View Full Version : Resonator added to Magnaflow?

I was wondering if anyone here has added a resonator to a magnaflow exhaust after the fact. If so, did it quiet the exhaust down? How much did this cost you?

Thanks

Why would you put a resonator? Too loud for your liking?

Actually maybe a bit loud but its the resonation (drone) which is the killer.

I didnt know that a resonator would reduce the droning. I actually just lost the heat plate on top of my muffler (silver sheet metal-like). It is driving me nuts. Im going to get it put back on today.

The 4Runner came with a resonator, just before the end of the tail pipe. This was probably removed, when they put in the Magnaflow. If you still have it, it souldn't cost much to put it back in.

The other option would be to have a quieter muffler installed, in place of the Magnaflow.

I heard a resonator should be put before muffler for max effect. Have you heard this Photog? Anyone know where you can get a cheap resonator?

I had the magnaflow system installed 2 years ago. After a week of driving I could not stand the droaning that occurred about the 2700 rpm range. So I took the magnaflow system out and put back the factory exhaust. But then it was way too boring. So what I did was after the factory muffler I had a shop cut off the resonator to tip, off. I then had the shop weld on the Magnaflow dual exhaust on to the factory muffler. The sound is just enough to rumble but not irritating when driving around. The rest of the $500 magnaflow is just a big paper weight.

No resignator. Just the stock exhaust with a Magnaflow mffler and tailpipe cut at the top of the axle. I don't notice any drone and my truck is a daily driver. Dual exhaust is too much exhaust for our trucks I believe. Lack of back pressure is not helpful, except to increasing noise level. I think I paid around $150 for the muffler and the guys time.

I wonder if there is even enough space under there for a res to be welded up. I belive the stock magnaflow muffler is 21" or so.

Is it possible for put something over or under the heat shield (right over the muffler) to reduce droning. maybe something like Dynomat. Or would he elements get the best of it?

There is somebody on this board who put dynomat insullation long the length of his rig. Mentioned it worked I believe. I may opt to incorp a resonator or switch mufflers.

Hey Jeremy,
Please let me know if you try and how it works. I have the same drone problem. If there isn't a good solution to this then I might considering replacing my Magnaflow with the TRD Exhaust.

Will,

I heard the TRD isnt much better. Im thinking of just getting a stock muffler and attach to the rest of the mag system.

I know the small cars have a resonator before the muffler. The factory 4Runner exhaust had a resonator can at the very end of the system. I don't know how much this really helps. It does hang up on rocks. I cut mine off, and brought the exhaust tip out just behind the mud flap. It will probably get crushed by a rock too, eventually. After cutting off the factory resonator can, I didn't notice any more noise than before; so it probably wouldn't have much of an effect on a Magnaflow muffler either.

Really??? That sucks :( Oh-well, thanks for the info Jeremy!!! I guess I'll deal with it for now and hope that something better comes out later on.

If you cut the Resonator off:
1) will it sound any different ?
2) will I still be able to pass emissions ?
3) what does it "really" do ?

Good question! Any one!! I have the same 1GR-FE in the runner and taco. The Taco has no resonator and no real difference so why................???

Ans 1 = yes, should be a little louder but maybe not noticeable in the cabin - every person is different in what they hear and what bothers them and what they are willing to tolerate

Ans 2 = no effect on emissions test

Ans 3 = to cancel out sound is the main purpose http://auto.howstuffworks.com/muffler4.htm

You are replying too fast :rotflmao::rotflmao:

That's great............ but there is no difference between the noise between the taco and runner so why bother???????????

But then again I'm an old fart and maybe deaf and every one is too polite to point it out and the taco is loud Broooommmmm Broooooooom.. Or it that zoooooom zoooooooom.

You'd need to use a dB meter to notice the difference possibly. I imagine the length of the two systems you are mentioning are different and these should create different frequencies which cause different sound pitch and volume.I think the FJ system is diferent too.

Since they only put it on the 4Runner, I'm thinking it might be noticed by folks in the back seat, or 3rd row. Something the Taco does not need to worry about.

Thank you :cool1:

BTW, Im not doing this for the sound, just to remove it, its already dented/smashed, lol
