In the past 6 months or so my MPG has dropped from 14.5 mpg to 11.5- 12 mpg. Could not figure out why. Finally saw Andries thread on cleaning the MAS sensor and throttle body. Went out and bought CRC MAS & throttle body cleaner. And boy, was everything dirty and oily from the Tru flow. I cleaned everything up, replaced air filter with a Purolator paper filter and will test tomorrow and see if MPG increases again. When I put the Tru flow filter in, there was sooo much oil in the filter. I used paper towel and wacked it on the ground to get as much of the excess out. After about a month of driving, there was sooo much oil still in the filter that it leaked out of the bottom air filter box. So much oil leaked out that I thought my power steering pump was leaking. Needless to say, I am sticking to paper element filters and changing it out every 10,000 miles.

My true flow seemed pretty oily also. I've since switched back to paper filters. I'll check my MAF/throttle body tonight and see how dirty it is.

your not suppose to use very much oil, some would say not to use any, lol I had a True Flow on the 99, loved it, once you know just how little oil to use, lol.. when it comes time to replace the stock crap on the 06, its True Flow for me :cool1:

Check out this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThmW2SW1I-k and you still want to use paper ?

The true flow came pre-oiled.

Your throttle body is going to get oily from the PCV system and accrue carbon build from small amounts of exhaust gas finding their way back up the intake tract regardless of what air filter you use.

FWIW, mine throttle body was 10x worse than the picture from Andries thread, and about 15k miles earlier.

Maybe I'll clean my True Flow and re-oil it with less oil. And keep up with cleaning the MAF and throttle body more often. That video was pretty convincing.

The true flow filter came packaged from the factory, saturated with oil. I can not tell how much there was unless you saw it for yourselves. Even after removing as much oil as I did, my whole intake was oily. I also had the TRD air filter and that worked pretty good. I took the true flow for granted that it would not have fouled up my MAS & throttle body so much, but it wasn't until the true flow was installed that got the intake so oily and dirty. I gonna run the paper element for a while and see what improves. I have not taken my 4runner out to test yet, stuck in the Midwest with that bad ice/ sleet/ snow storm.

I almost considered getting the truflow air intake, volant and the K&N intake. What i was looking for was a cold air induction that would use a dry filter versus a preoiled filter. Not much out there for V6 models. I did some research on cold air intake systems that utilize a dry filter and is easy to clean. After months of research I bought a cold air intake from AFE. The unit replaces everything in between the fender and the throttle body. The filter is inside an enclosed plastic box which draws air from the fender, but also has an inlet in the front lower portion of the air box. There is a rubber plug that comes with the unit if you wish to cap off the front inlet. Best part is the filter is made of an oil free dry cloth which is very easy to clean with a hose or in your sink with or without liquid dish washing soap. After cleaning simple sit it out to dry; no need to oil before reinstalling. Unit cost me $392 from 4Wheel Parts in Santa Ana. I will get some pics up soon.
