Well after researching and looking around I finally decided to get a toilet system for remote trips and a tent to use with it (which will hopefully function OK as a shower tent in the future).

Human waste is becoming a major problem on many trails where there are no toilet facilities (Rubi is one example), but many others as well. Also females will probably appreciate it when camping.

After much reading it seems the PETT is the toilet to get, compact in size, good waste management bags and sturdy. Seems to egt many thumbs up from the cruiser people.

Got it from Cabela's and also got this (what looks like a neat foldup privvy)

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/Item/59/07/96/i590796sq01.jpg

Will see how they work and might have to test them out at Big Bear as the campsite toilet is not............... ideal shall we say.

I think James have been using this and seems to be happy with it.

that's the exact stuff I have.
The PETT is a normal home sized toilet seat so it's really nice. The disposal bags are double sealed, turn liquid into gel and odor minimizer. It's the king hehe

The privy tent (which I use for showers) is actually very nice- it's got a "towel rack", zip open roof, side slot (for shower, reaching change of clothes, etc)

Only thing you should practice folding it up. It is like the window shades, if you can't figure them out, dont get this! It's a snap tho, and I like that it's no packing space and it just pops open.

here's my shower in use at DV

Kewl, I'm good with window shades so it should be OK.

At least this way longer remote trips should be OK. Just need a mag rack to read while doing seat time. :jester:

The women will love this. I think I need one too!

It would look funny as hell having a stack of these all over the dunes at Pismo. Put a flashing red light on it at night when in use :rotflmao:

Are the waste bags biodegradable at all? Reason I'm asking is if you were in remote areas for any length of time it would be none too desirable to carry the waste bag around in a truck. If the bag was biodegradable then you could at least dig a hole and dispose of it.

bulldog
05-19-2006, 02:03 PM
The bags are supposed to be degradable. But it would still be better to pack it out. Especially pending on the location (i.e. Rubicon). I think guys normally have a separate bag which they carry on their roof rack for waste and trash to pack out. Keeping it for longer than a week might be an issue though, but normally you should be so remote than digging a hole shouldn't be an issue.

Better double check on this but I think that in the desert, you cannot bury waste. The area is so dry that decomposition will take over 100yrs.

In the desert, if you are not going to pack it out, you should smear your junk on rocks so it can decompose w/ air.

I believe the bags decompose, but being in the desert, I and everyone else has always packed it out. I do keep my garbage hanging outside the rig.

expat
05-19-2006, 07:27 PM
The E.coli in human waste would provide for the process of decomposition. There should be enough H20 in human waste for provide for its own decomp.

I too will check on this but that's my basic understanding of biology

From the Boy Scout Assoc of Am.

Catholes: Proper Disposal of Human Waste
Perhaps the most widely accepted method of backcountry human waste disposal is the cathole. The advantages are:

1. They are easy to dig in most areas.

2. They are easy to disguise after use.

3. They are private.

4. They disperse the waste rather than concentrate it to enhance decomposition. f It is usually easy to select a remote location where you can be certain no one is going to casually encounter the cathole.

Selecting a Cathole Site
1. Select a cathole site far from water sources; 200 feet (approximately 80 adult paces) is the recommended minimum range.

2. Select an inconspicuous site untraveled by people. Examples of cathole sites include thick undergrowth, near downed timber, or on gentle hillsides.

3. If camping with a group or if camping in the same place for more than one night, disperse the catholes over a wide area; don't go to the same place twice.

4. Try to find a site with deep organic soil. This organic material contains organisms that will help decompose the feces. Organic soil is usually dark and rich in color. Refer to the jars used to demonstrate decomposition. The desert does not have as much organic soil as a forested area.

Digging a Cathole
1. A small garden trowel is the perfect tool for digging a cathole.

2. Dig the hole 6 to 8 inches deep (about the length of the trowel blade) and 4 to 6 inches in diameter. In a hot desert, human waste does not biodegrade easily because there is little organic soil to help break it down. In the desert, the cathole should be only 4 to 6 inches deep. This will allow the heat and sun to hasten the decay process.

3. When finished, fill the cathole with the original dirt and disguise it with native materials.

A Note About Urine
Urine does not hurt plants and soil directly. Sometimes, the salt in urine may attract wildlife. Animals can defoliate plants and dig up soil to get at the salts. It is best to urinate on rocks and in places that will not attract wildlife.

And from the Center of Outdoor Ethics...

In most locations, burying human feces in the correct manner is the most effective method to meet these criteria. Solid human waste must be packed out from some places, such as narrow river canyons. Land management agencies can advise you of specific rules for the area you plan to visit.

Contrary to popular opinion, research indicates that burial of feces actually slows decomposition (at least in the Rocky Mountains). Pathogens have been discovered to survive for a year or more when buried. However, in light of the other problems associated with feces, it is still generally best to bury it. The slow decomposition rate causes the need to choose the correct location, far from water, campsites, and other frequently used places.

good info, tho what about toilet paper? (I think there are bio-options) Anyway, I prefer to pack out but it is good info listed Mark. At least we know what the correct procedure is.

Here is a thread on this topic. Although it gets quite contemptuous, I'll point out that it is for places like the Rubicon where pack-it-out is the only responsible thing to do, and where the topic gets heated. That is seperate from the general topic that Mark is referencing.
I'll always pack-out but it is good to know that bury (catholes) are acceptable too.
It's a good read to understand the frame of mind tho.

James can comment on this, but my understanding is that it wont take more than a minute or 2. tent folds like a shade (might have to put a peg or 2 in for wind. The PETT unfolds quickly and then it is just insert bag and remove when down. So my current estimate would be 5 -10 minutes to unpack setup and then pack it in again. How long you sit on it is your business though

So for a trail stop it will work fine, but even better for a camp stop.

I'll post up after actually using it a few times. James has been using it though for toilet and shower (obviously not in the PETT).

It's however fast you can fold it. Just a few seconds.

There are even pockets at the bottom so you can put some rocks in there and no need for pegs.

PETT $80
Bags with everything needed including wipes and sealant $25 for 12 ( I am going to see if I can find a cheaper source for these). THe bags can be used more thna once, I think they can tak up to 60 Oz of waste.

The tent I also ordered from Cabelas, didn't order the PETT tent as it was too expensive and lookied to complex to setup.

Now, if you delete their privy tent, and add the other Cabela tent, it's about $50.00 less. Was there a special going on for $167.00 OTD?
