Hey everyone -

My girlfriend brought home a little black lab puppy and it's suddenly important to protect the 4runner.

Any suggestions on good online dealers for a rear rubber cargo mat and a divider for this little girl?

Also: Any recommendations on the highest-quality brands for a rear cargo mat and a divider? I can't afford to buy cheap stuff!!

Many Thanks!

Husky and weather tech seem to be the prefered brands of all weather (and species) cargo mats. Another idea is to get a dog kennel and transport the dog around in that. It's actually safer for them in the kennel (some call it a crate) and they do like having their own space to settle down in. I crate/kennel trained my dogs so they sleep in the kennell at night and I often find my lab/beagle mix Sport in his kennell just napping. My full beagle- who left us last summer- also loved her kennell.

A large kennell will fit in the back of the 4R just fine.

the weather tech are nice.

line-a-truck from rear gear is also nice. I have both installed.

and put your pup in a crate. it's not safe to have them roaming around while your driving...for you or for them.

Congrats on the new pup! I've had a black lab for 7 years now. The first few years he traveled in a kennel because he liked to chew on things like shift levers and turn signal stalks. Because he was in a kennel, we never got a mat or divider. Now that he's older and no longer needs to chew everything, I just flop the seats down cover it with a moving blanket and bring a dog bed.

Post some pics of the pup when you get a chance!

Hey, thanks to everyone for the excellent information. It sounds like the crate idea is the way to go responsibly. I'll probably do the combo of crate and rear liner.

Here we go!

It really is a lot safer for the dog, just think how often you have to brake quickly. I feel guilty putting my old dog in his crate as he loves hanging his head out the window and/or looking out of the tailgate .

I actually have harneses(Sp?) and straps that belt my two dogs in. I removed the rear headrests, slid the straps on the mount and reinstalled the headrests. i simply put on their padded harneses, clip their harneses in to the strap and go. keeps them in place and allows them some freedom. I got everything from Pet Smart.

I appreciate the thoughtful responses. I want to make sure this little girl is well taken care of and everyone's past experiences are exactly what I needed.

Much appreciated!

I know it's 3rd gen but some ideas I started working on for my own 4runner. Dog divider/cargo mounting/panel protection. There is now a double sliding cabinet (seat hight) on the driver half, removed the CD player and tube on pass side. Dog will be on the right and I can sleep there when seat is down. I am going to weave a Paracord net for the hoop.

Saw something similar on a 3rd gen, but they used what looked the window race nets but larger to cover the whole back storage area from the roof to the floor. Wish i cold find the pic looked really clean.

Black labs rock, mine is to retarded to ever be in my car :) He goes in my old Lexus for rides. I rescued, and he was previously severely abused, hes got a great home now and has the easiest life ever. But has some nerve damage, among other problems but i wouldn't trade him for the world.

Grats on the puppy! post some pics of the new pup!

Nick great start to your project there. I think the blackwidow stuff from Oz really hits the mark. Your's looks similar in design. If you haven't seen their stuff check them out.

I'll post when I finish the box and am all bolted down. I'll start a different thread so there's no HiJack. It'll be after next week after I return from my trip home for my sisters wedding.

On topic. I want a mat that doesn't have a lip on the front (toward the seats) so when I lay the seat down I can sleep on it without a lump.

LOL, especially when they help you drive down obstacles :jester:

I just got a pet barrier at the local petstore.
These look pretty nice though for the 4Runner

The pet barrier is what sparked the idea in my head (a white husky sheds everywhere and it is my DD). I did want the option of "through space" use and mounting of equipt/pouches....annnnd scratched up plastic sides just bug me.... so I will find a way to fasten it that is easily removable, I was thinking velcro wraps.

I have black weather techs throughout the vehicle....I removed the rear toyota mat and put the cargo liner down cuz the mat slid around...After pullind the large carpet mat out the weather tech stays put...Weather tech is the way to go!! Little $$$ tho
