some pictures and where did you get it done?
My tailpipe is mashed so I have to get it worked on and was thinking of going w/ a smaller (more clearance) muffler.
How does it sound without the resonator?

Good point James, the Toyota muffler is huge. The Magna flow should tuck in nicely by the frame and be less prone to damage.
Mark it would be great if you can post a pic of the "belly line" by the muffler and the rear where the tip comes out.
I had to remove my rear resonator, after beating up the pipe a number of time, and have them turn it out on the side by the tire.
First encounter, this was after I bend the pipe open with the wheel wrench

Second encounter, had to bend it up by hand.

Ok will get some picts soon.
Yes it definitely provides more clearance all the way and we fooled around for awhile trying to get the final tail piece high and behind the right rear wheel.
James - I had it done at FreeFlow in Agoura Hills (Mike). He is a MagnaFlow agent (also Flowmaster and one other I can't recall right now). The shop is on Dorothy Road right of Chesbro on the 101. He has a very nice setup with three bays. I found it by searching google for MagnaFlow agents in my area.
As far as sound is concerned, its discreet but throaty. I am not complaining about any annoying drone (I drive with the music up loud anyway :cool1: )
Mike said the note will change over the next few weeks as it heat cycles. I love the sound but am going thru gas because I'm gunning it all the time :spank:
While I got ya here, Andries may be coming down to SoCal the week of July 4th. Any chance you'd be free to help out with the install of the spacers during this week? Andries will be confirming his possible trip soon.

Yeah is it much louder on the freeway? The exhaust note is basically non-existant stock.. I'll be interested in your opinion with that
Yeah, when Andries comes we can do your lift. I dont think I can do it at my place but we'll work something out

There is a "distant rumble" of a V8 but as far as I am concerned its not intrusive. I don't find it any harder to listen to the radio or talk to the family.
As you mentioned the stock noise level is basically non-existant. With the magnaflow its a low burble as you accelerate normally, becomes a deep throaty sound when you get on the power hard, as goes real quiet (like no noise at all) when you back off the power. At cruising, as I said, its a low grumble. I'm happy, but then my last two cars were a convertible Porsche 911 and a race track prep'ed Porsche 964 with a 3.8ltr flat six that sang its own note. No use for a radio in either of those cars!
I have to admit I am a bit of a rev-head and appreciate the sound of a quality exhaust. As far as the Runner is concerned, I get exhaust envy each time a F250, Ram 1500 etc goes booming by me. (This sounds like a self help group now! :jester: Hi I'm Mark. I like engines!)
Anyhow, you guys can see for yourself soon enough and take a drive. Then post your impressions (good or bad) so people have a reference when they look here in the future.
As to the lift, we can do this at my house as I now have a garage and driveway :bigok:
Here's a link to the exhaust photos. Taking an eye level view, you cannot see the muffler because it is up and behind the body rail.

Nicely tucked up. Would love to her it.
I'm bit of a quiet freak with the 4R and SUVs. AFter I removed the rear resonator I have tried many times to make it quiet, even with the stock muffler. It has a bit of a resonance on the highway when I back off the throttle.
At least it is well protected :p

Mark,
I like how they tucked it right behind the wheel. I'll def. want a ride in your truck to see the noise levels. I'm sure it sounds good! :bigok:
Yeah we can knock in your lift in short order-

James - your in Pasadena right? I'm at the Frostig Centre on N Altadena all this week. If you have time in the afternoon (after 3pm) I can swing by if you want to check out the exhaust. Let me know.

Well I did a little drive test in expat's truck- and the exhaust sounds really good :cool1:
It's got a nice, throaty sound. Like he's been adding some beef to the engine or something. When you accelerate, it kind of "growls" I guess. At city street driving, it is very entertaining.
At freeway speeds, all i could hear is a distant, low sound- almost like additional wind noise. I don't know if I would notice it if I wasn't paying attention for it.
It def. does not sound like some crazy exhaust and is not intrusive.
Maybe Expat can update later after all the new-factor excitement wears off on how the freeway sound is. Good thing is he does alot of freeway driving so it will come to light faster.
Overall, I'm really tempted to do this mod. I was thinking of keeping the stock resonator just aft of the muffler- possibly cancelling the freeway sound?
But the routing of the exhaust is great- really tucked up nicely and much improved clearance on that side of the rig now.

Now I will have to hear it in person.
A good excuse to get a new muffler is to bust the current one on some rocks or something :rotflmao:
It would be interesting to see if there is enough space for the stock resonator behind the muffler. The stock muffler is huge, almost anything else is smaller.

james,
i have the v6 with a magnaflow welded on. i had the resonator sawed off and a tip welded on, and then i had the tip sawed off so now the exhaust is just hanging out right behind the axle. i like this muuuchh better.
the sound is pretty nice though it's no v8 for sure. it does drone on the highway unless the music is turned on but i love it when i get up on it.

i dont know of the magnafows build or its sound, but when i had mine installed we tried it with the resinator and there wasn't alot of differance so we cut it off and the exhaust came alive, now there is no dought its a v-8. low grumble at acceration with mild throttle, and very aggresive only when i want it to be.(wide open). though some times, near cops, i wish it would simmer down some.
so i notice you guys also like to "use" your 4runners i made my own lift kit sor the gen 4 4runner its nice but i also have a 85 4runner with 6" custom lift and 37" swamper IROK's so an inch or two more on my 4th gen wouldn't kill me.
i think im at the current limits of the factory stuff and i noticed you guys were talking about a lift you were going to be installing. is it for a gen 4? or will a taco or tundra kit fit on here with minnor mods? thank you for any info.

I have had mine since Early May. I still dont find it annoying. I love the look at people when you floor it. I guess they are not excepting a 4runner to sound the way it doesn
I used to work by that muffler shop.

I'm going to take it back next week and have two things done - a chrome extension and also tilt the extension ever so slightly downwards. At its present angle its collecting water just inside the extension and showing rust :nono:

After a bad line yesterday with some guys from TTORA, I'm getting the new muffler that I always wanted.
How is your MagnaFlow working out? My buddy Brett, who's one of our Master Certified Techs here at Findlay Toyota, said that the Flow Master might be even better, and he also said that it's much tougher (read: as in rocks) than the Magna Flow. Did you compare the two when you got your new setup?

So what did you decide on? My local shop sales Flowmaster and I have thought about their "suv muffler" (suppose to be less drone).

Haven't got it yet, I think that we're going next week to get it installed. My Master Tech buddy has a shop not too far from my house, or work for that matter, that he trusts. He just had the Flow Master installed on his big ass red Chevy (we call it Big Red) and he said that it is tucked so far up, he'll never hit it. Plus, he said that his big red beast is much quieter now. I'll keep you posted when I get whichever one installed. My034runner sounds a lot louder now that my oem muffler met the big ass boulder on Sunday!

I got the Magna Flow. I was going to go possibly with the Flow Master, but the guy at AAA Muffler in Las Vegas said that it would be way way too loud. Basically said that the Flow Master would be better suited for a truck, where you don't have all of the excess noise radiating into the passenger compartment, like in a SUV. He actually said that he would rather see me with a OEM muffler set up again, because of the noise level, but that the Magna Flow would be much more quiet than the Flow Master. So, that's what I got! Had that stupid resonator sawed off and rerouted out the side behind the rear wheel with a chromed tip- nice! :D :bigok:
The sound is definitely more noticeable than the OEM muffler, but not as annoying as the OEM muffler with a big hole in it! :guns:
Another thing that I always hated about the 4Runner's exhaust, is where they route the resonator and tip, out the back?! I destroyed that the first weekend, stupid placement, it should have always been out the side. Doesn't sound as throaty as the V8 (I have the V6) but still not bad.
Mark paid too much though, I only paid $150.00 and that's with tipping the guy that put it on, but I might have gotten a break because I work at a Toyota store, and they're friends of our parts and service guys.

I'm an Internet manager @ Findlay Toyota, so, like customers hate to pay all of the $$ for a Toyota, they've taught me to hate paying retail for anything as well. If I can work a deal, weather it's because of where I work or not, I'll always try to pay less than retail. :jester: :soap:
And as far as pics go, I forgot to get my camera out of the glove box when they put my034runner up on the lift. I can take some tomorrow. :bigok:
