Guys, when I hopped in my truck this morning and turned it on, the maintenance light flashed several times. Since I've been moving around a lot lately, most of my things are packed - including my 4Runner books/manuals - so I haven't been able to look up what causes the maintenance light to go on.

Any ideas????

When was your last oil change? I believe it will come on for that.

I changed the oil myself just two or three months ago ... probably haven't driven anymore than 100 miles or so since then ...

The light comes on after about 7500 miles are driven since the last reset, it starts flashing for longer after 5000 miles. Not sure if it has a time factor like 6 or 12 months as well.

So if you changed your oil recently just reset the light.

Thanks, Andries. Could this be the case even if the light blinks and then goes off? Or is it usually only the oil change thing if the light comes on and stays on?

If its blinking, I don't believe that is the oil change remonder. Mine stays on (illuminated) until I reset it. I'll have a look in the manuals and see if it says anything about blinking.

Thanks, Mark, that would be a HUGE help! Basically, as soon as I turn the vehicle on, the light blinks for several seconds, but eventually goes off.

If you didn't reset it after the oil change, it doesn't know you changed it & will continue to flash for about a week & then will stay lit to notify you of the urgency. One of my 1st changes, I didn't reset it & went thru the same thing. I didn't take the time to read the manual for a while & then it stayed on. Once reset, it shouldn't come on unless there is another issue.

Here's what the owners manual says...

This light reminds you when to replace the engine oil.

This light will come on when the ignition key is turned to ON and will go off after a few seconds.

When you drive for about 5000miles after the engine oil replacement, this light illuminates for about 3seconds and then flashes for about 12 seconds with the ignition key turned to the On position. If you continue driving without the engine oil replacement, and if the driving range exceeds 7500miles, the light will come on after the ignition key is turned to the ON position. The light will remain on thereafter.

If the light is flashing, we recommend that you replace the engine oil at an early opportunity depending upon the driving and road conditons. If the light comes on, replace it as soon as possible.

You need to reset the light after the oil replacement.....

If the light fails to reset, the light will remain flashing.
