So I decided to make use of the wires that went to my running boards.

How much were the LEDs. Looks like they would make nice rock lights?

$14.99 ea. I don't think they are quite bright enough for rock lights. Maybe after your eyes adjust to darkness..

Right now they just act like the dome light does when set to door. They even fade out when the truck is locked. I'm going to add a manual switched operation soon.

That's a cool little touch. :D I wonder if there is enough power with those running board wires for more powerful rock lights?

I think for rock lights you'd want a switched higher gauge wire.

Joel, I'm wondering if they are water-proof. I know that you guys mainly off-road on the rocks or desert in California, Utah,... Here in Canada we mostly have muddy or "wet" off-road environment. A lot of mud-holes, water crossings. Are those lights going to handle those conditions?

By the way, they looks coooooool....

"This totally waterproof L.E.D light is great for flooding the deck with soft super bright light from beneath the gunwale. The low current consumption makes this the perfect light for in the cabin, locker or bilge."

Thanks, I'm happy with how they came out.

Cool mod. My SR5 did not come with lighted running boards. Is it pre-wired?

Thanks

I have only seen limiteds pre-wired, all the SR5 and SEs I have seen didn't have the wie coming out of the body. Doesn't mean you can't wire it up yourself though.

those would be handy mounted under the hood and also on the tailgate when it is raised up

Very nice Joel!

How did you mount those? To the sliders?

Pics?

TIA.

I was at the dealer yesterday, asking about the wiring for the running boards. There is a short "pig tail" connected between the running boards and the wiring harness inside.

The wiring harness MAY have the connector for the running board lights, in all models. The dealer did not know, and we could not tell from the info they had.

Maybe someone on this forum knows, or has the wiring diagrams for the SR5 and SE, that shows this connector. It will be in the wiring harness under the front seats.

All the SR5 and SE models I have looked at does not have the wiring for the running baord ligths. I have only seen it on LTDs. It is just a wire with connector coming out on body below the B pillar area next to the frame rail.

I understand that the LTD has the wiring, hanging under the vehicle. What I am saying is that the hanging wire is plugged into a connector in the main wiring harness, just after it enters the body.

If the connector on the main wiring harness exists on all models, then all we need to do is mount the lights, and run the wires to the same spot.

The question I have is: Do all models have the connector on the main wire harness, under the seat (not under the vehicle like the LTDs)?

I gotcha Photog, but have no clue if the connector exists on SR5 & SE. It would be cool if it did.. then it would be smooth sailing for the install.

Am I not making myself clear? I know there is no wires, under the body, on the non-LTD models. That is not what I am talking about. That little wire goes throuogh the body, and connects to the main wire harness, via a plastic connector. It is not hard-wired into the main harness.

OK, I will relax now.

Even if the main wiring harness has a connector it may not be supplied with power. Toyota has various options such as DRLs that need more to be functional than just the wiring harness. We just need to identify the connctor on the main harness and see if voltage comes on when a door is opened.

That's what I'm talking about.
It would be a bummer to have the wiring and no power.

Next time someone has one of the front seats out, check to see if there is a connector that has power, switched by the door-jam switch.
I will also check, next time I have a seat out. :)

The best I could see fromt he diagrams is that the running board lights feed out of the harness running by the doorsills. SO you can just pop off the plastic covers by the door and see if you see any connecters. A quick test with a multimeter should verify if it is there or not. To run it through the plug in the floor you will probably have to take out the chairs. Which is only a few minutes anyway :D

I found this:

I hope this helps somebody.

I would like to do this mod. Maybe tap into the dome light or ignition. Maybe place the lights under the Side mirrors or underneath near the doors. Problem is I do not know anything about wiring or electrical stuff.
