View Full Version : Gas tank locations different?

Has anyone compared the gas tank location on a 03 V6 to that of a 03 V8 or 04 V6? Was talking to the guys at Shrockworks today and they mentioned a possible difference. The only thing I could think of was the position of the transmission may impact everything else because of the different transmissions used (the 4sp versus 5sp)

The front crossmember (directly under the drivers feet) is in a different location between the V6 & V8. Maybe this is throwing them off?

Is that only for the models with the V6 and 4speed?

As far as I know the gas tanks on all 4R are the same adn the skids as well. Ok well apart from those of us that did some rock modifictions to it :)
The 03-04 V8 is different from the other models. Not sure if the 03-04 V6 is different from the 05+ 4Rs, but as far as I can tell all 05+ (V8 and V6 ) have the same location of the crossmembers and exhaust. The 03-04 V6 might be the same as well, but that will have to be measured.

All model year 4.0 L V6's are the same. And as far as the change in the V8, all they did was add VVT-I to the4.7 L. I've been under both engine models, and never had realized any difference, except for the disfigured gas tank skid! :pissed1:

There is also some difference in exhaust pipe route from V6 and V8.
V8 has pipe crossing near transmission, V6 - near transfer case right behind the transfer-case cross-member.

Yeah it does, but has no effect on gas tank placement.

I know, just mentioned the difference. ;)

All VVTi engines route the exhaust by the transfer case (so 05+ V8s as well). The reason is the older V8 only has 3 cats while the VVTis have 4 cats. I would still like someone to cut the secodn cats on eac side of the VVTi off and then route pipe under the transmission adn use a high flow 2 to 1 cat. This wway it will free up the clearance under the transfer case adn emissions should still be fine.
I'm plannin gon replacing my V8 3rd cat with a high flow unit so I can remove the porrly designed Y pipe before the cat with a high flow 2 to 1 cat. Not sure how much benefot I wil get, but might help to free up the engine at higher RPM.

Thanks for the info so far guys.
Something is definitely different on some of them.....related to the crossmembers or gas tank placement.
If the front crossmember is in a different place on the V6 models, that would do it.

The skid will have to be different for the V6 vs. the V8. Lance already looked into this, as he is making a V8 skid that will not fit the V6.

What skid....where?

The stock skids are not different, the front crossmember is in a different location on the V6. It is a few inches forward or back..I forget exactly.
also the pre-vvti V8's have a different exhaust, as Andries said. The V6 has a lower crossover pipe (same as Tacoma). VVTi V8's have the crossover pipe.
Also, this may only be for the 03-05 and then Toyota changed it again-- not totally sure, it was a while ago when we measured and I forgot all the details.

OK, now I just heard a rumor that the 2006 sits 1" lower on the frame than previous years. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
If so, it would require an almost completely re-designed slider.....

Jim,
The 06 has all new plastic cladding. This cladding is the cause of different measurements- I don't know the exact measurement but 1" sounds pretty close

Jim you probably should do a test fit or measure on an 06. Maybe you can just drop the sides of the sliders slightly and reuse the brackets.

I will. Sounds like the upswept angle may have to go on the round tube.

We just made appropriate changes to fit all 4th gen 4runners......V6,V8, even the 06.
