Is anyone familiar with 5-6" ramps that can be taken along on off-road excursions? Are these something a person could purchase or do they need to be built? I believe they have military roots.

They have been suggested to me to avoid unneccessary damage on an upcomming multi-day trail run. Most of the other vehicles are heavily modded jeeps. I am "welcome" to join, but with warnings. They will assist with spotting etc.

Edit: I searched prior to posting, but couldn't find anything (probably didn't even use the right search terms).

I think there is a discussion on this topic here. Do a search, you should be able to find it. Where is it that you're going where these "Jeep" people think that you need them?

While much longer than 5-6", they might be referring to something like this:

Google "bridging ladder" and you'll get some hits..

I dont have any experience with using these as a "bridge" but I have used the concept to get out of snow and mud..

A group (mixed, not a specific club) is going for the sept long weekend to "Rennie" a town about 1 hour from Winnipeg. Here is a trip report w/plenty of video:

I need to be honest with myself...is this simply beyond what a 4Runner with a mild lift (2.5") can do? Will my satisfaction with a weekend of med to hard-core offroading be greater then my dissatisfaction with possible serious trail damage? I do not profess to have anywhere near the skill level exhibited by some of these Jeepers. They are experienced, and have strong stomachs. They know their limits as well as their vehicles limits. However, how can I get used to the tr4s limits if I don't go? I get nervous as soon as I start lifting a wheel.

I know there were a number of different ones discussed here, but I can't find the thread now :confused1
