Fun time! Although I only got to do the one trail, Last Chance Canyon, it was worth the drive. Hopefully these picts will hold everyone over until the group gets back and posts their picts. I look forward to heading out there again (with a lift!). Thanks for leading us, Jason. Here's a few picts, all my picts can be found here (http://www.mikestang.com/10-20-06.htm).

Thanks for posting so soon! I am still bummed. I had a faint hope of going on Friday but had to be at home. At least I got some work on the 4Runner done.

How did the rear axle's link(s) get bent? Assuming that was yours, what are the repair/replacement plans?

Mikestang

I was hitting the little bracket all day long on rocks, so one of those times I must of whacked the arm itself. I never felt it, so that tells me how weak those arms are. I'm going to straighten it as best I can with a pry bar this afternoon. I'll look into those beefy tabs and replacement options when I get to the suspension in a month or so. Maybe Kurt is ready to make another set? :) There's also the All-Pro (http://allprooffroad.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=120) and Sonoran Steel (http://www.sonoransteel.com/fjc_rubicon_express_links.html) ones. They're a bit expensive, but look really stout.

EDIT - I ended up taking the trailing arm off and persuading it a few times with my 10 lb sledge. It's more or less straight for now, but I'll still be replacing them in the near future.

Sorry to have missed ya Mike. It was a great trip. Jason sure knows his trails!

We had some pretty serious carnage on Saturday and on that note, I'll leave it up to the poor bugger to explain his situation when/if he gets home and stops licking his wounds.

The photos will be worth a thousand words.

Here is a teaser...

Its what happens if you don't brush your teeth - cavaties!

Thanks to Andries for putting the trip together, to Jason for leading on Saturday, Robert for the caps, and everyone else for the food and company around the fire.

Cheers
Mark

Got home around 8:40 tonight. I will unpack tomorrow and probably only got around to the pics later this week.

It was a great time folks, thanks for coming out and everybody contributing. All I can say is that at some point we will have to do a "rematch" of this area.

Yeah, I'm home! Thanks to all who helped me get home! A big thanks to Jason, your experience with your 4Runner, working on mine was beyond the call of duty. And likewise to Andries, John and Mark, I never would have gotten off the mountain without you. For Henry making sure that I was road worthy, on our way to the 395 & 58 highways.
And to Joel and Kurt for escorting me safely back to Las Vegas.

No spare ring... Jason, Mark, John and Andries pulled the third and removed the ring gear. Then put the third back together.

I had the pleasure of bending the tabs back on the ring bolts :cool1: Never thought I would be doing that this weekend.

I'm sure a proper write up will be done at some point, but to explain the diff issue.

Robert popped his ring gear on the rear doing a very tough obstacle that Jason, Joel and myself decided to bypass. Robert and Mark can give their account of how it happened in detail, but I think the video and pictures will give a better idea of the obstacle.

AFter the obstacle his rear diff got progressive worse from a clicking sound to more agressive grinding. Mark then proceeded to start towing RObert to see fi we can get him to a spot to fix (initialy we hoped to reach Colorado camp). However after his rear started to lock up while being towed, we got him to a nice flat spot adn decided we better get his rear rolling again.

We initially though that some of the metal that broke of his ring gear was locking up the diff, so the oil was drained and Jason start removing metal bits with a magnet form the housing. He managed to get quite a few big chunks out. We then tested the diff with the wheels in the air, but it still kept locking. SO we had to pull the third. Fortunately Jason was there and knew exactly how to pull, since he has been working on his axles a couple of weeks back. He led the charge with the rest of us lending a hand.

After he pulled the third we could see the ring gear was completely trashed in one section, more pics will show it in detail. SO what happened was that the pinion gears would collide with the now defunc ring gears at random causing the axle to lock up. Fortunately the spider gears will still in good nick. So we pulled the ring gear from the carrier and the put the carrier back into the third. As there was no torque on the carrier anymore we were able to just hand preset the load on the carrier bearings.

Jason then popped the third back with John's help and some random assistance from the rest of us. We tested the axle and all seemed to rotate freely. All of this took probably 3 hours or more from when we stopped had lunch, got Jason back to the repair spot, etc.

Fortunately between the lot of us we had the tools, gear oil and know how to get it sorted out and running again.

Robert was able to lock the center diff and drive out in front wheel drive.

The rear axle of the 4R is only a semi-floating unit, so the carrier is required for the axles to carry the weight.

All in all Robert was able to drive home, which will make it a lot easier to get fixed now.

This pic probably show the best perspective of RIng and Pinion fall. It is about 14ft or more high with vertical ledges that vary from 2-4 ft. So you can only attack it by snaking through it. The angle of the 4R going up it varied in my best guess between 30 and 50 dgerees, pending the spot they were at. As I previously said, we looked at it carefully and decided to bypass it. Even after Mark and Robert went through, we still passed on it before we knew the real damage.

http://joelrasmus.com/gallery/d/14831-1/DSC_2291.jpg

The pic of me standing in front of it definitely had a wrong angle as I'm not playing in the NBA :rotflmao:

Had a great time this weekend with everyone. I would like to thank Jason for being kind enough to meet a few of us a Jawbone earlier on Friday and leading us on a nice ride.
Thanks to Andries and everyone else for their work on putting the trip together.
The food was better then I eat at home with Roberts’s ribs, Andries filet mignon and Korean ribs, Jason’s carna asada and salsa, then the sausages, Chile verde, stew, chicken, garlic cheese bread, several salads and more then I can remember.
I look through my photo’s to see if anything is worth posting a little later.

Finally I have a chance to check out all the good pics. It was a real treat to finally catch up with the T120 crew. I'm glad I was able to lend a hand, with the trails & the wrenching. Very cool bunch of guys & gals & kids & dogs to hang out with. I look forward to the next trip. Thanks to everyone for everything. Good food, good people, good times & good wheelin'!!

I thought the run up Goler Gulch was great & gave just enough challenge to keep things interesting without banging things up too much, well, except for optional R&P Falls. Which, I must say, is the most challenging obstacle I have seen conquered in a 4Th Gen. Kudos to Mark & Robert for showin' us how it's done. :thrasher: Here's a couple of mine:

I actually ended up getting my 4R on the road for this one & my buddy, Jason, drove it out Sat morning. Most of the pics were taken by him. Thanks for coming out to my neck of the desert. I had a great time. Sorry guys, I forgot to warn you about "Crazy Capt'n Ron". :D You don't always want to follow him!! It sure keeps things interesting though. I hope to see everyone again soon.

I finally talked to Brett, he just got back from vacation also. He told me to get it in there, and he'd get it warrantied. He asked how I did it, and I told him I was just driving, so he tells me, "you weren't driving, how high in the air were you?" :nono: :rotflmao: So I told him that it was bouncing around. I'm just going to point him to this thread.
When I told him that the ring was in the back of my034runner, he asked how did it get there? So I told him about the trail repair. He told me to tell the service writer that it will only move in 4wd, and he'll take care of it. It helps to have great friends in the right places.
And Brett is certainly a great friend. :bigok:

Robert's diff giving up...questions????

http://joelrasmus.com/temp/robert.mov

Trying to learn from this, where did the diff actually decide it had enough? I watched it over an over and can't see a time where the rear wheels were off the ground and then come down hard enough to grab. It sounds like it might have happened just before the front wheels climbed the last ledge.

Did the video actually miss what might have happened a little earlier? The noises in the video sound more like rocks hitting the sliders from the front wheels throwing them up, rather than the gears shearing. I know when Robert finally crested the final ledge with his rear wheels we all heard the grinding of the gears but I assume it happened before then.

What's your thoughts on this? I didn't see the left side of the truck so anyone on that side notice anything in particular that caused the gears to go?

As I watched my climbed, I think I was real lucky not to do a CV joint, especially seeing the left wheel lose and grab traction as it did.

97kurt
10-27-2006, 02:12 PM
I was on the left side watching the rear tire when it happened. I remember seeing the rear wheel spin and stop on the way up. The drivers side rear tire also lurched forward right when I heard that sound.

Moral of the story, we need two video cameras next time.

bulldog
10-27-2006, 03:49 PM
From what I saw and heard it seemed to happen as RObert was climbing the last ledge and most of the truck weight pushed onto the rear axle. I believe the driver side rear tire was spinning and then got traction at the moment when all the weight pushed back. COmbination of bad things happening at the same time. Skinny pedal to get up, weight pushing back with front bouncing up, rear tire getting traction at the same time. Robert gave more skinny pedal to get up than you did Mark, and I think he just had a number of things catch up at a bad time.

I think your front was OK, as you never had a wheel running away with spinning and then grabbing traction. In part you can thank traction control for this as it kept the front wheel speed in check quite few times, but you were less agressive in attacking the hill than Robert though (look at Joel's video a few times). So far nobody has popped the front end yet, which tells me the beef added to the front has helped a lot, especially with ATRAC.

I think the biggest challenge we will face is to make sure the rear axle ring and pinion do not deflect like in Robert's case. Bigger tires, more weight and bigger rocks will put even more stress on the drivetrain. Hopefully ARB carriers and solid pinion spacers will help a lot to improve the situation. Once we can get gears I guess we will find out. I would love to go do that climb next year sometime when my truck is ready. Hopefully with better results.

10-27-2006, 04:07 PM
I'm not sure as to which point they snapped either. It's not really clear. But I think I'm going to go play around up in Logandale this Sunday on the same rocks that we played on two weeks ago, and take it a little easier, especially now that I know what line to take to get up the waterfall there.

Robert.. I really think you should take it easy for 100 miles or so on the new diff. Just to make sure it gets broken in correctly.

When you guys finally find gears you may want to spend the extra bucks and get them cryo'd. Nice part will be that when you get an ARB you wont be able to spin your tires like that.

Im still driving on my spare till I figure out what tires I want. I got a hole in one just as we were leaving last sunday. My geolanders are pretty chewed up so I dont want to push em anymore. Great tires but I abused them.

That and I also need to weld a new hanger for my exhaust this weekend and do some yard work.

Get some BFG KO's. They're great tires and have served me well. They are also very strong and can handle everything that I've thrown at them so far. With the exception of Tie Rod! :jester:  Just my 2 cents........

I had bfg ko's on my ranger and I did like them but they are pricey. I am debating between 33 (285/55/r16) maxxis bighorn MT tires. Or a 32 (265/75r16) Nitto Terra grappler AT. Since snow is in my future I think AT is the way I should lean. That and I dont want to even think about re-gearing.

I've never heard of that first one. Nitto's I hear are pretty good, but between the three, the BFG's are the better tire. I can send you to Discount tire that we use, and get you our price on them. I was going to get Jon a set of them for $160/per before he decided that he couldn't get up here anytime soon.

I can send you to Brian, who is up at Lake Mead and Tenaya, or Marc, down here in Henderson. Let me know.

Now back to topic, wheeling......................................

Robert - what was the cause of the rear Hoe's leaking? I thought these things were the mecca of shocks?

The one I blew isn't as bad as the Big Bear TTORA trip one that I blew. You must remember that I still have the prototypes, and not the production ones. The protos shock bodies are too long, therefore, they tend to over-compress, thus the blow out.
The production shocks will have a shorter shock body, so less likely to over-compress.
But they do ride great.

Yep, the body is too long as we saw in Vegas when I picked up the Prius. SO the shock overcompresses and the shaft destroys the body seal, leavving oil all over the place.

Time to get the production ones now.
