I'm wondering if it is an issue with the sensor that indicates the rear hatch is closed. What happens if you open/close the hatch after it stops working?

Anything is possible, but the cost may easily exceed the cost getting a locker. You will need to study the wiring diagrams of your 4Runner and the 09 Trail. You will likely have to swap some ECUs...
