Default Transmission flush

I was trying to find some info about a transmission flush, but couldn't find any write-ups. Is this generally a task that you have an independent shop take care of? If so, how much am I looking at? Also, I was told that I would need a total of 12 qts of WS for my 2006 (6 to flush, 6 to refill) Does that sound right?

Any other pointers are welcome

Thanks, guys!

Yup, that's why I want to change it now b/c I love my car and want to make sure it runs for as long as possible. I'm currently at 63k and have never towed anything.

A full flush needs the Toyota computer to open all the chambers in the valve body etc. When I sold Masa my old transmission with 103k miles on it I saw the fluid (which was going to be changed the week after it got wrecked), and it probably should be changed prior to 100k. My '07 has 65k on the clock now, so I'll probably flush it soon. I plan to just go to a stealership and have it done.

Thanks for the info...I was actually trying to avoid going to a dealership b/c I have had some bad experiences. Anyway, any idea how much this is going to run me?

Last time I had the dealer do it I think it ran around $200.

Weird. Just went to my stealership prepared to pay $200 for a flush and they won't do it! Went to tranny specialist and they won't flush without dropping pan and changing filter and then he said that often changing the fluid causes more problems. Something to do with the detergents in the fluid. Well I guess I'll check another dealer to see what they say about a flush that you guys seem to have no trouble getting

I asked the dealer for the part number for the filter and he said there was not one and it can't be changed. Let us know if you find out otherwise.

I thing folks have had problems with fluid other than Toyota fluid.

yeah that is pretty strange that they won't do it. I remember when I went in to pick it up I looked at my receipt and it showed they put the non WS fluid in the tranny. I bitched and told them it required it and after the service manager went and talked to the technician he apoligized. The tech remembered my truck though and showed me that he put the WS fluid that they had in bulk in it and that the computer puts the other fluid on the receipt as a default...but to make a point they definitely did it so you should be able to get it done at the dealer.

The local dealer did my World Standard Transmission Power Flush at 73K. They charged $ 200 for labor 8/10th and 14 quarts of fluid at $ 7.78 each.

Wow, that seems pretty high. I was quoted $60 for labor alone since I told them that I would bring in my own fluids.

$60 is just for a simple drain and adding fluid but no computer controlled flush. I ran into the same thing at my dealer. They had cleary spoken of of a flush but only quoted me $60. They actually performed a flush and wanted to charge me $200+. Because they screwed up we agreed to more than $60 but less than $200. Somewhere around $140 IIRC

Ah OK, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!

I'm not sure if you've done this yet or not but the SF dealership doesn't have the ability to do this, they don't have the machine anymore. You'll have to check out other dealerships. I know the one Sunnyvale and San Jose do. I think Sunnyvale charges the least, I was quoted 230-ish, I believe. As soon as I get my 4Runner back from a different shop, I'll be doing this as well.

I gave some dealerships a call, and the service advisor in San Jose was the most informative, knowledgeable and friendliest of the them all. He mentioned that the WS fluid will get dark quickly (even after a flush) with our 4runners and unless you're towing frequently, the 100k flush would be OK.

It seems like most of the folks on here have had a flush before 100k, so I'll probably end up doing it sometime before the year is over.

I just had mine done at an independent shop called Lexology in Redondo Beach. I think it was ~$180, all seems well. I was at 65K.
