Default Need a new muffler - baby coming soon and need it quieter

Hey guys! So my wife and I are due for our first little one around July 6th, and with that my exhaust drones too much in the back seat for what I am comfortable with subjecting a baby to. I couldn't really figure out where to post this question to, so if it needs to be moved to the right area please do mods.

So I currently have the DirtyDeeds Muffler Installed pic, it's the 5"x12" muffler that he sells, or used to IDK... as I can't find it on his site anymore. It's basically a perforated straight through muffler without any packing in it. The sounds not bad from the front seat, but when riding in the back the sound gets old!! Not as bad as my brother-in-laws Civic Si (sold) or his current Subaru WRX STI with full turbo back exhaust (loud).

So what are your guys thoughts on a quieter muffler, without putting the factory one back in? I would like to keep a touch of the beefier sound, but would love to get rid of the interior noise/drone. I'm thinking just a replacement muffler and not a whole cat back setup.

Don't know if you can have both, the beefier sound......And keep it quiet!! You may just go back to the OEM Toyota muffler. At least we know that That one Is quiet!!!

Well I was hoping for something a touch more aggressive sounding than stock, but not loud like I have now.

I've got a Flowmaster 3 chamber installed that's pretty quiet until you hit the gas. When the car is idling you can't even hear it at all standing right behind the vehicle, but when you go WOT it really yells at you. There's a little bit of drone on the freeway, but it's just barely louder than wind noise, and having a conversation at normal talking levels drowns it out completely.

I'd be perfectly comfortable putting my own kid back there (If I had one). I don't know the model number of what's installed but if you're interested I can try to figure it out.

I have a magnaflow muffler. It's quiet enough at cruising speed that it doesn't bother my wife, but it's got a good tone and some growl when you lay into the throttle.

So I have to ask, have you ever rode in the back of your truck with that exhaust? I have in mine and that's where my want to change to something quieter comes into play. Now I do my my 73 Nova that had dual flowmasters in it! Such an awesome sound!

I've never ridden back there myself, but my friends have never had complaints, they are always surprised how little drone there is.

One thing I should note, I sound-proofed my entire car except the ceiling when I did my audio install. That probably has a lot to do with it. It really wasn't much louder at all though before I put that in

Been a passenger, but never in the back. Never had any complaints.

Yeah as a young one, car rides used to put me to sleep all the time. But that was in a Cadillac.

I thought about that before, but last I recall seeing they were like $250 or more.... But I would like the idea for when I need a quiet running truck!

The 12226 Magnaflow is decent, has a distinct sound, but not loud inside. You can always go for a longer length Magnaflow for quieter sound. The Magnaflow was too quiet for me, I changed mine out.

Times 2!!! I know mine has worked like a charm! Between that and the mt's the little guy has no chance of fighting off the sleepy bug! lol

I have a DynoMax and it has a nice deep rumble with it dumped before the axle. You can hear it i the cab with this set up. With the tailpipe on it is just a little louder than stock and not to loud.

If you want quite go to a bigger muffler or stock. To bad I just threw my old stock one away too.

Yeah I was thinking it would be a matter of a larger muffler, I do have the stock muffler in my attic if ever needed, but that will be my last resource.

Has anyone tried any of the Flowmaster 50, 60, or 70 series mufflers?

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe I have the Flowmaster 50 Delta Flow, with 3" pipes.
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/?p...&partno=943053

I forgot to ask the muffler guy what he ended up installing for me because I was too happy about the price and how great it sounded. Judging from the dimensions on Flowmaster's website though, that's exactly what I have and I love it (see post above)

I would call it aggressive when WOT, but neighbor and small child friendly. I've tried flooring it through some tunnels around here and it sounds like Nascar, and I've set off one or two car alarms in parking garages before (and even got a warning chirp from a car on the street when I had to give it gas uphill next to parked cars in San Francisco). But at the same time, it's quiet inside the vehicle and at cruising speed it's easy to forget there's a difference from stock. I think you'd be happy with it, in case you didn't notice I'm loving mine.

What really sucks, is I can't find any 4.0L video's with the exhaust I'm curious about. Guess I'll just have to pick one and go for it.

Well just found this on a 50 series, I think it's in a 4.0L though.

That's actually very close to the same one that I have, I really like it. That one is a "Super 50" (previously called 50 SUV). Mine is the 50 Delta Flow, it's hard to tell, but sounds very similiar to what's in the video. There's not much of a difference between the two. According to the website, mine (50 Delta Flow) is actually a bit louder.
