Default Big Bear Braai VI - June 11-13 2010

Well it is time to organize BBB VI (yes 6), June 11-13 2010

We are a very big group this year so we will have to organize different groups for trail runs, and other plans will be interesting.

Updated info:

Camping:
We will be camping at the Oso Group Campsite
- Water - there is actually a water spigot in the middle of the camp, close to a bunch of picnic tables. I didn't see anything mentioning potable or not. There is also a bathroom sink with running water.
- garbage facility - there were large trash bins in the parking lot
- Restroom - large bathroom facility with flush toilets, urinal and sink.
- Picnic tables - Plenty of picnic tables, some grouped together and others scattered about.
- There is a BBQ place and fire ring, campfires are allowed and charcoal BBQ (this can however change at the last minute)
- There is an amphitheater with large group fire ring
- Trees and shade
- Space for 25 trucks and 100 people (might get a few more trucks in if needs be)
- More info see http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Os...e=NRSO&chkAg=y

For latest conditions see
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardin...ns/index.shtml

Campsite location.

Driving directions:
Located 32 miles northeast of the city of San Bernadino, CA. From I-10, take the Alabama exit in the city of Redlands, to Lugonia Ave (St Hwy 38). Head northeast on Hwy 38 for approximately 28 miles to the campground entrance.

GPS coords:
N34.17583 W116.86056

Folks not sure how to get there, should caravan or ask to meet up at the Discovery center.

Camping fees:
$509 for the whole site - I paid already. So there will be a fee of $25 per truck for the weekend. Please pay Friday so we can use the extra funds for firewood Saturday.

I think it might be time to hit up John Bull again. Its been two years since I did it I think. Some new trails would be good.

For those of us unfamiliar with Big Bear, what it is like? Google shows mostly rock crawling type trails in a forested area.

Some trails, like the John Bull and Holcomb mentioned look gnarly, what are rig requirements?

It's not all rock crawling and crazy trails. I've taken my 2wd up there so it has some easy stuff. Beautiful scenic place

Depending upon numbers, there will likely be two run groups on one day. No matter what your readiness, there are trails for all.

Count me in for this trip. I had a blast last year and wouldn't miss it for anything. John Bull sounds like fun, I would also like to do Gold Mountain, I heard it is good run.

We can probably look at doing what we did last year. 2 groups with one doing harder trails and the other milder trails for Saturday and then everyone doing something more scenic on Sunday. Actually we need to find that Pontiac or whatever on Sunday, loved the small town we ended up in for lunch.

For the harder trails you typically need a lift, 32AT tires, ATRAC or rear locker and sliders. This setup takes a bit of work to get through John Bull, but Gold Mountain less so. Obviously experienced drivers (in rocks) helps a lot with this setup. Obviously expect some bumps and scrapes on John Bull, etc. Some of the other trails can be from mild to easy.

The other thing is we will need to look at camping, as the typical sites only take 10-12 trucks max.

You SoCal guys, is Butler peak open again? We used to have nice sundowners there every year till the big fire closed a bunch of trails on the West side.

Bummer. WIll check a bit later to see if Holcomb might be open, doubt it though. SO we might check more of the East side this year.

Anyway, it seems so far the date is OK. Just need to figure out the details.
