Default spring moved on coil over?

I have Icons up front, all of a sudden today I hear this horrible rubbing. I look under the truck and nothing seemed out of place, I kept driving.

I get out and push down on the front bumper and here the rubbing. I looked at the coil over and see rub marks on the shock body.

Looking at the coil over it seems the spring has moved off where it sits on the bottom about 1/4-1/2 in.

So, what would cause this?

I'm going to get the wheel off tomorrow and take a look. I was just curious if anyone had some input.

Default spring moved on coil over?

Take a picture, it is normal for the coil to rotate on the seats in a coilover.

Maybe not enough preload? I have ICONs and add a little preload on the coil spring by turning the upper collar down (clockwise), This will give a little lift. As Bulldog mentioned it is normal for the coil spring to turn, but I haven't seen it come unseated.

Something doesn't look right, maybe it's just the angle. When your truck is on jack stands and the tires are not touching the ground do the springs have a slight preload? Take a look at my setup.

Hard to tell fom the pictures, but it doesn't look right. coil should not rub on shock body, and also the botto of the spring looks like it may have cracked. contact Icon and see what they say.

Well I took the wheel off today and after jacking the truck up a piece of the spring that broke off feel out. Also the spring perch is broken.

I am going to leave the truck parked till I get back from an out of town trip. In the meantime I am going to send Icon an email and try to reach them by phone tomorrow.

I will keep you updated.

Sucks, but I'm glad nothing worse happened.

How long have you had your coilovers for, and how many miles have you put on them? Do you wheel hard? This is the first time that I've seen a posting about a broken spring on this forum.

So I finally got around to pulling these today, I took pictures and sent to Icon as they wanted to see what happened. They said its covered under warranty and this should not have happened. Mileage is probably around the 25k mark not positive.

This is just a daily driver with light off road trips. It happened while street driving.

I'll keep updating after Icon gets back to me. Everything should go pretty smooth.

That can happen to the coils once a blue moon, typically on the part where the coil get shaved to fit on the flat surfaces. Have seen that happen on all coilvoers, but you were just lucky I guess. Not something a lot of people will have to deal with, but if you look at large sample size it does pop up.
As long as they take care of you things are fine.

My driver side spring broke right at the perch, last year new years night.......Couldn't figure out what the hell it was, because it happened while I was on the freeway!! Wasn't even wheeling!!

End result, ICON send me two new front springs....and all is good!!
