The "permit" is free but if you go through the simple online test and have the permit there is no way you can claim ignorance about proper camp fires.

I know the idea is lame because the many have to suffer because of the misdeeds of the few. Gold ol' Commifornia..... but don't shoot the messenger please!

I have never seen it enforced, but I think it is mainly an effort to try and limit forest fires due to people not knowing (or doing) the right way of establishing a campfire in a forested area.

Sounded terrible on the surface... Given the fire problems and abundance of ignorance, I can understand the need for it. The firefighter in me says its great, but the libertarian in me says what the hell?

Haha. Overall, I guess its a good thing.

Jim, no intention to shoot the messenger meant.

I'm not sure what part of TN you live in, but it would be like me saying, "Flood insurance? WTF do I need flood insurance for?" (assuming you're in part of TN that floods a lot). Wild fires are our #1 "natural" emergency out here.

Heck, if we had a Libertarian Prez we'd fix all of this nonsense! No offense taken either. I think Mikestang got a good jab in atcha' anyhow! LOL

Sort of like talking on a cell phone while driving. Everyone flaunts the law but the fine is not cheap:

"A California campfire permit is required for a fire outside a designated recreation site. Violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization or imprisonment for not more than six months or both. 16 USC 551 and 18 USC 3559 and 3571"
