Default Radflo 2.5 Lower Bushing Movement

Hey guys,

I went in for an alignment and they called me back saying they couldn't even do one because of the bushings on the CO's are completely worn out.

I was shocked so I went back and they lifted it up and showed me and sure enough.

They put a pry bar under the wheel and move it and the LCA moves up and down about a 1/4". I wish I got a video of it and will try to at another time.

Any knowledge about this happening before?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Doug

Huh... how interesting.

How old are your Coil Overs? I wonder if we can get polyurethane replacements? Now you got me wondering if I should check mine; though the 4Runner aligned fine last I did mine...

The bushings/bearings on COs do wear out. They typically will make a lot of noise when they do. Contact Radflo to see about replacements, relatively easy to swap out and not too pricey if you are out of warranty.

I bought these in 2011 from Overland Warehouse. I'm guessing these are out of warranty.

What does the coil over bushing have to do with front end alignment, isn't that done with the cam bolts on the lower control arm?

I asked the same thing. They said they felt like it would just knock it out of alignment with one bump. So instead of arguing and trying to get it done I just said okay. I was only getting it aligned because my GF had to get work done on her car and we were there so it wasn't absolutely necessary.

I mean... I guess if the CO was angled slightly different than it would be with a good bushing it could affect it? Though really since this is a double wishbone we're talking about, I don't see how it could move a significant amount; but I could understand their hesitation to waste your time and money only to have it come back because the alignment went bad after a bump.

Sounds like the bearings need to be replaced but it also sounds like the lower control arm bushings have play as well?
The lower bearings run about $25 for a pair IIRC

Possibly play in the upper ball joints as well? That seems like a lot of play for a bad coilovers bearing and it would make a lot of noise at that point as well. You can take off the lower coilover Bol and check the bearings. Also email Mike Crosby at Radflo he will take care of you.

For the CO to give that may the bearings must be shot pretty bad. They should make a lot of noise when driving. You may want to inspect them to verify it is the CO bearings.

If you need to swap bearings, it is best to do top and bottom so you don't have to do the job again in the future. The lower bearings normally gets the worst of it though.

Thanks Bobby, I just emailed him and will let everyone know what Radflo says.

Thank you everyone for your input and help. As for the noise, I actually have been hearing things but was thinking it was coming from the D rings on my front bumper.

I put some electrical tape on the D rings and going to drive the 4R today to see if I hear anything.

Will keep everyone posted!

Doug

Talked to Radflo (Thanks for the contact Bobby) and he said
Quote:
"The lower shock bearing is a wearable part and can easily be replaced. We use a US made FK brand bearing for both quality and long life. These do have a Teflon lining that wears over time. You can purchase the bearings from us for $20.00 each. Thanks"
So I ordered these. Now does anyone have any advice on replacing? What's the process like?

Thanks everyone

Doug

If I remember right from when I had the coilovers out to clean for a squeaking noise, it's secured by retaining clips and then it should be easy to knock out.

There's a c clip and you will need a snap ring pliers to remove it. Once it is out you can press them out with a ball joint press or a socket and vise. Make sure to put a lot of silicon in them to assist with install. The c clip might be burried under some gunk so clean them real good. I need to check mine soon as well. Should be straight forward. Don't have pictures but if you snap a couple add them to this thread, lol.

So I FINALLY got some time to start tackling this issue.

I ordered the bushing and received them awhile ago but just haven't had time to start working on the rig.

So I pulled the passenger side off and this sounds like a completely newbie problem but I can't figure this out.
How do you remove this bolt!?

Also the bushings look different but I can't be sure. Any direction in this?

Thanks everyone for your help!

You can use a rubber mallet to tap the bolt out or you can also use a floor jack on the lower arm raising/ lowering until it wiggles out. Probably just a little pressure on it holding it in.

The new bearings should be universal for either side.

I tried hammering and doing anything to get it free. Wouldn't budge.

The new bearings just seem smaller than the ones that are on there. Not as wide as the gap but that might answer itself once I can get that dang bolt out

Thanks for the input Bobby!

Spray the crap out of it with penetrating spray and give it a few more wacks. If you can jack the arm up a little it might relive some pressure that's on the bolt.

Not sure if the top bearings are the same size as the bottom bearing. Did you specify when you ordered?
