Default Your second battery

I am looking to pick up a second battery to run in my 4R and wanted to know what battery people use? I was looking at either a marine/RV diehard or one of the odyssey ones. I would like to stay away from the optima- I was not a fan of the one I had in my other cars and I personally think they are overpriced. Thanks for the input.

The Diehard Marine.

I missunderstood. I thought you were asking for a replacement battery.

I run the optima blue top because there are several nice mounting cages for it.

I use an Odyssey 950 MJT, as my fitting location is passenger fender by the fire wall. SO heat protection is a must in my book if you live of go to ho climates. The 03 V8s have limited mounting space with the air box and access to the gearbox dipstick. So I chose smaller battery with the penalty on capacity.

The little 950 still has a lot of juice though. A 1200 will fit in my location, but make access much harder to the dipsticks.

My 1500 fits well, but a bit tight in the 08 V8 between the firewall and the airbox (not sure if there are any differences in the engine bay between the 08 and the 03). It does however make it difficult to get to the engine oil dipstick. I don't have a gearbox dipstick, so I can't comment on that one, my 08 has a sealed transmission.

There are some pics of the 1500 in my 4Runner in this thread: Battery Trays

Jon, The transmission dipstick on the 03's is harder to get to, thus my choice on a smaller battery. I might consider a 1200 in the future (maybe) for more capacity.

Golden, most folks prefer to add a solenoid system simply connecting the 2 batteries. This way there is no messing with the OEM wiring, and far fewer issues.

When you get it installed in the Taco it would be great to see some pics of how and where you fit it.
