This is the best write up I have found for changing the spark plugs on this engine. I hope it helps.

Just did the V8, seems to be easier as you just remove the intake tube between the airbox and throttle body.
Besides get iridium plugs and you are good for 100k+ miles. I belive iridiums are now available for the V6 too.

did my plugs, cleaned my MAF and TB while i was there. not as bad as the write up made it seem.
dont need to remove the air intake in the Pass side, it pushes out of the way just fine. DS is straight foreward once that tube and bracket are removed. took me about 45 mins to do it all. and it was 15 degrees out side. the plugs are expensive from the dealer 6.xx a pop! but mine were way over due it looked like. TB was DIRTY! almost a whole micro fiber towel is black. i did have one prob, i broke a bolt off in the head.... one on the ones that holds the intake assembly down. ill have to get the EZ out out and deal with that this weekend. |

Iridium plugs will last for 100-120k. No idea what the manual says, but the 30k came from the time when there were not iridium plugs available for the V6. Not sure why they haven't updated it yet.
Iridium is specific so it doesn't wear down like platinum, etc.

Great illustration for changing plugs, abit time consuming for me. The older models were more easier to install back then. My biggest fear is crosstreading the plugs. I just take my 4runner to the dealer and have it done they say the same every 30,000 miles with genuine plugs not iridiums. $160.00 I'm do for my 3rd change. Should I upgrade to better plugs or stay the same for my 04 runner?

Ed and I just did all of mine a couple of weeks ago at his house. Not all that complicated. Had to move that stupid bracket on the drivers side next to the fire wall.
But once that was gone, no worries!! ![]() The ones we took out were installed @ 30k miles. These new ones went in @77K miles, and the old ones were in such good condition, that I kept them as trail spares. The little carbon that is on them, can just be wiped or brushed away!!! ![]()

Not to rehash or dig up older posts, but I need to do this as well. Does anyone have part numbers for the plugs they used? And is it worth it to use the iridiums on my V6?

Well, I'm going to rehash an old thread. I did my plugs today with NGK Iridium IX pt# LFR6AIX-11 were my choice due to their long service life.
I also, cleaned the MAF and TB and dropped in a new OEM air filter. FYI: It doesn't state anywhere on the NGK box, but do not attempt to adjust the gap with a coin style gapping tool with Iridium spark plugs. You can damage the fine Iridium tip using the coin style gapping tool, either bending or breaking the center electrode. I checked the gap on all 6 plugs with a wire style gap tool and were all within spec of the factory gap. |

MCL68, how is the NGK Iridium plugs working out for you on the V6? I am thinking of using them on my V6 for the 60,000 mile maintencne that is due now.

It's been about 19 months since I installed them. I've had no complaints or issues using the Iridium plugs. The truck runs like a champ and the beauty is, I won't have to change plugs anytime soon.

Thanks for the update. I am going to order mine tonight and not worry about having to do them again every 30K

I just did my V6's plugs last night and will add the following
It makes life easier to remove the airbox and "L" shaped intake tube. Just loosen the intake tube wire type hose clamp where it fastens to the goofy plastic intake tube that plugs into the firewall. I also remove the entire intake manifold cover that is held by two cap type nuts and set it aside. On the driver's side there is a flat black metal bracket that comes up from the engine and bolts to the side of the intake manifold. It is roughly at the back sparkplug area. Remove the top bolt and loosen the lower bolt and you can move it out of the way of the two back spark plugs as you replace them. There is also a sensor plug and hose right there that are easy to unclip and give you more room. On each plug's threads I apply a little anti-sieze compound. On the rubber parts of the coil packs I clean the dust off and apply a little high temp silicone grease to ensure a water resistant fit and keep the rubber from drying out.

What gap setting did you use? Thinking of .044 but the book says .043. I can't remember what I gapped them to last time. Maybe .043
