Default Hypothetical question... manual tranny?

Hey guys, i posted a long while ago about throwing a manual tranny in a 4th gen 4runner, and I discovered it would be damn near impossible and very expensive.

Now, I am just wondering if it would work in a gx, since it is identical to the Prado. I know the Prado has 3 different engine choices, a 4 cyl, a v6 and a diesel inline 6.

So, say someone were to find a gx with a blown engine or something. How difficult would it be swap in an engine and manual tranny from a Prado or similar (tacoma, fj)?

Would it work with the 2.7 and 5 speed manual, 4.0 and 6 speed? or no way in hell it would work at all?

I think the same issues as the 4RUnner still applies. Actually converting a V6 4RUnner to a manual will be much easier, than the V8 or GX.

For the same money to try and make it work with a stock engine you could probably just get the diesel front clip from overseas and convert it to a diesel with a manual

That's how the whole idea started, I saw a manual Diesel Prado, and fell in love. But that is definitely impossible to get in the states.
So I figured since it's almost the exact same platform, why wouldn't it be easy to put in a new engine and tranny from a similar model.

Also, bulldog, regarding the 4.0 4runner, I am not sure the transmission as well as clutch pedal mounts, etc would be there. On the gx they would.

All just wishful thinking on my part.

A dual tank diesel will be really nice for the long fuel range it will have.

Maybe a true stick shift would be a total pain in the ass but paddle shifters are definitely doable. Clownmeat on .org has a write up of a paddle shifter in his rear turbo third gen. While you wouldn't have a clutch you would be able to select which gear you are in. Seems like this may be a good compromise if you have the technical know how.

Is it legit to bump my own thread 7 years later? I didn't even realize I had asked this, but I found it scouring the web.

I am back with another hairbrained idea, I found a cheap Lexus GX with a blown engine just like I was talking about back then...... and I would like to drop a 5 speed and a diesel in it, how nuts am I ? Assuming I could find an engine and tranny for non-astronomical price that is, would it work?

Well you can make anything work with enough time and money.
Go for it!

Swapping to a manual isn't as hard as you think. You can buy a bellhousing adapter for R150F to 2UZ bellhousing which my friend makes and you can use a T56 style throwout bearing. The hard part of the manual swap in a GX470 is getting all the Prado interior bits to make it look OEM. You'll most likely lose ATRAC and cruise control because the ECU will think you're in Park or Neutral. The ECU will also be made at you and throw a christmas tree dash because it isn't seeing the auto trans shift solenoids. You can probably buy a 2UZ M/T ECU out of a LC100 but it'll probably not be plug and play and you'd have to repin plugs to make it work on the GX. Then again, I've never looked at the ECU pinouts of either ECUs.
