Cool, I agree about pulling the air from the front. Another thing to do is check others filters to compare to. If you are wheeling on the same trail maybe at the day you could do a comparison ?

So here is my solution, worked awesome, zero debris in the filter after 2000 miles, a LOT offroad. I would suggest the Outerwears pre-filter to everyone for every application, this one would fit the stock intake in the stock location as well. I used a bit of bike tube to hold it folded over it so the filter was taught, as well as protect the filter from the edge of the hole. I used:

WATER REPELLENT PRE-FILTER W/TOP
Part Number: 20-1023
Filter Manufacturer: K&N
Shape: ROUND
Filter#: RB-0800
Base Diameter: 4
Top Diameter: 4
Height: 4
Material: Water Repellent

Well, I would say it is comparable to stock location based on previous amount of wheeling/dust collection on the filter. I should also mention that there was no noticeable loss of power, response or MPG.

Default Outerwears pre filter

Thanks for the info on these. After this weekend at Uwharrie and how dry and dusty it was I am going to order one of these to use in my stock location for now until I can get a hold of a 4" hole saw. My stock paper filter had dust clouds coming out of it when I removed it

Adding some more info that is pretty good pertaining to the HVAC and pressure system in the cowl by adding a 2.25" holes on the inner channels of the COWL to allow for more air flow. Also a good explanation of why to use a 3" OD intake pipe (paired with a 4 ID-3 ID reducing elbow) verses a 4" OD.
Here is where I plan on order stuff from https://www.intakehoses.com/silicone...oss-black.html

COWL Snorkel from Tacoma World
