Default Submerged my starter in water not it clicks before starting

I got stuck in about 2-3 ft of water and the entire drivers side was flooded. I took in about 2 inches of water in the cabin as well. The battery light came on after I was pulled out. While I was drying out the interior I disconnected the battery and the battery light turned off and has not come back on.

That happened this past Saturday, Sunday the truck started just fine and drove home (3 hours) just fine. Monday morning the starter would click once then the truck would start. That happened on my way to work and again when I was leaving work.

Today in the morning the truck started without making the click sound.

This evening I pulled the starter and checked all the internals and connectors. I cleaned the contacts, after I reinstalled it, it was still clicking before it would start.

Any ideas on what could be the problem? Do I just need to replace the starter with a new one? If so, what brand do you recommend?

Thanks for the help.

*Title should say "Submerged my starter in the water and "NOW" it clicks before starting"

Did you clean the solenoid, and check if you can lube it?

Andries,

I took the entire starter apart and did not see anyplace that required lube. I assume the solenoid is attached to the starter? I checked the FSM online manual and didn't see any info on the solenoid.

I continued my search and ended up swapping the relay from the fog lights and the starter and the truck started right up without the click.

I will get the correct relay and report back.

Thanks for the help.

Replaced the starter relay today and everything seems to be working fine. The old relay showed burn marks on every contact.

Thanks for the help.

Well I thought I had the problem fixed by replacing the starter relay. I replaced it Friday afternoon and drove the truck that afternoon and evening with no problems. Saturday morning the truck started fine.

Later the afternoon it started clicking again but the truck started. On Sunday I didn't drive the truck at all.

Monday morning I go to start it and all it does it click and nothing. So I went ahead and picked up a brand new battery, installed it and stick nothing.

I ordered a new starter that will arrive tomorrow.

Any other ideas on what the problem could be?

Sounds like you are replacing pretty much everything in the circuit.

I would also undo the ground connections, especially on the engine, clean them thoroughly and put it back.
