Default Barney Riley Trail/Camping 12-14 June 2009

Barney Riley Trail & Camping 12-14 June.

Planning on doing the BR trail and explore side trails, mines and viewpoints in the area. Also hope to enjoy some fun river crossings and the natural hot tub

More info on trail and area here
http://www.californiajeeper.com/barney/review.htm

Camping:
Current plan below.

Friday Night
No reserved camping so I will try to get 2 spots at either site. Typically a site can take 2 trucks per site. Fees are $14 per site and $6 for an extra truck.

Going to try and get camping in this order:
1. Makleeville Campground
http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/htnf/recreat...mpground.shtml

2. Crystal Springs Campground
http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/htnf/recreat...mpground.shtml

3. Kit Carson Campground
http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/htnf/recreat...mpground.shtml

Saturday Night
Camp close to the hot tub area in the heart of BR area.
Need to check with Ranger station in regards to the camping regulations, etc.

Weather
Day time 70s, High 40s at night
Expected scattered thunder showers on Friday and Saturday. Clear skies Sunday.

Agenda

Level of difficulty is planned on being moderate to difficult on some side trials. Sliders, lift, 32" AT tires and traction device (rear diff lock and/or ATRAC minimum) required.

Friday
Meet and setup camp in resort campground. Pending on arrival times we can plan on some nice cooking, or just chilling by the river

Make sure to gas up before arriving

Saturday
We should plan to leave the campsite around 8:30 AM or so, to allow good time for the trails. Guys not camping Friday should plan to be there no later than 8:30 AM.

Go up the trail, check out Mogul Peak, some of the smaller mines and side trails on our way up to the hot tub area. Aim is to reach the hot tub area around 4-5PM, allowing enough time to set up camp and enjoy the river/tub, etc.

Have a good campfire, meal, etc.

Sunday
We should try to leave camp by 9:30AM.

Head out to Leviathan Mine and check out some side trails on the way. Have lunch by the mine area.

Leave to get back to the 89 after lunch and head home.

Food

TBD
Pack portable lunches, as we will have them along the trail.

Maps and comms, etc
Comms :
Ham - 146.460 MHz (Offroad CH2 IIRC)
CB channel 31

If there is an issue with this one we will change at campsite on Sat Morning

Also ham repeater in area 146.655 PL 131.8 (not sure if it is active)
Additional echolink repeater
Output Freq: 146.115
PL Tone: 203.5

I'm in! We'll have to see how high the water is when we go, might have to swim over to the hot tub..

Not sure about this. The date is good, but some of those boulders look pretty big ?

The trail is not listed as a difficult trail at all. So it shouldn't be tough technical wheeling, but I have never been there.

I think there are side trails that offer more challenging terrain. The main trail is supposed to be bumpy, but not difficult.

Either date works for me..

Google Earth file with overlay and Garmin track to the hot tub.

We can probably check out the Leviathan Mine while we're out there also.

Yep, lots of side trails and mines to go check out. I'm marking them on a map at the moment.

I was thinking camping Friday night at the Carson River Resort on the 89 (between the 4 and 88). They say camping by the river. Then leave form there early on Saturday and hit the trails by BR. Set up camp for evening by the Hot tubs.

Then Sunday go check out more stuff, and leave around lunch time.

So what do you guys think of the prelim agenda?

Should I phone and book the resort river side camping?

Looks good to me. A lot of those mines might just be piles of discolored dirt and not a visable shaft of any sort. But we can take a look.

I'll be there friday night so include me in the #.
