Here's my proposed agenda:

Friday
  • Leave the Bay Area in the morning
  • Grab some lunch on the way
  • Head to Slick Rock
  • Tackle Slick Rock, then set up camp, OR vice versa
Saturday
  • Head to Bridgeport to explore Bodie via Hwy 4 (100 miles)
  • Grab some lunch in Bridgeport
  • Drive to Bodie and explore the ghost town
  • Camp out at Cooper Mountain, or Kavanaugh Ridge
Sunday
  • Head home

Sounds good to me. Especially since the weather is playing nice as it seems.

Wouldn't we just go one way on Slick Rock? Or would it be an out and back?

And Bay Area folk can meet at my house in the morning. Or if Todd does go we can meet at his place since he is closer to 4. Either way it would be a good meeting spot.

I believe it starts at Lake Alpine, then the trail takes you South. Once we're done, we'll need to traverse back west and then hop onto 4 again.

Are you guys sure that Slick rock is even open? Has anyone called to see if it is? I thought it closed after the first snow?

Ahh man, I think you're right. Thanks for pointing this out. I'll call to double check.

Slick Rock is still open!

I just confirmed with the Calaveras Ranger District that it's still open and will be open until 12/15, or if a major snow storm drops before then.

Their contact number - (209) 795-1381

The site is outdated...

That is great news. Hopefully there aren't any major storms coming through.

Any idea on Hwy 4 past lake Alpine and 89? Those close for the winter season as well due to snow.

If they are closed, it will be a hell of a trek back up through South Lake Tahoe just to head down to Bridgeport and Bodie. It would increase travel to Bridgeport at least 2 1/2 hours. (from 2 hours to 4 1/2)

Google maps routes us back down and around up through 88 and 89. So from Lake Apline over on 4 might be closed. So Slick Rock might be tough to do. Unless that is all we do.

But the Caltrans website does not say it is closed yet.

Argh, looks like 4 is closed just after Lake Alpine.

I'm down to just hang out at Slick Rock. We can also look into going north of Tahoe?

What does everyone else feel like doing?

Also looking on the Weather Channels extended forecast it looks like the days leading up to Thanksgiving it will be raining, which means snow, which more then likely Slick Rock will be closed.

We could just head through Reno through Tahoe and hit the desert area and just explore. I know its not as exciting but I really just want to go camping.

(That is unless the wife and I find a house we are wanting to buy that weekend then there is no camping trip, according to the wife. But the likely hood of that happening are slim, so I am going camping.)

We could probably make it to camp in the Bridgepoint Area on Friday depending on when we leave. Even do a little evening exploring. Explore Saturday and then home Sunday.

Probably around there or a little colder I would expect. I have a 0 degree bag that I use year round that works then bring extra blankets just in case.
