I've got a crazy question. I was reading that the 09 trail edition 4runner has a more aggresive form of atrac and has a dedicated button to turn it on in low range.
Does anyone know if we could hack this form of atrac into a different model 4runner? Since we don't have a rear locker it would be very beneficial. Is this even possible? |

Not really sure, maybe a hacker can get in there and change it..........but I don't think there is a way. I've never really had much of an issue with it, but I also have three lockers....rear, center and front (front just installed this year finally). I'm sure one of these Silicon Valley types here can chime in.

Anything is possible, but the cost may easily exceed the cost getting a locker. You will need to study the wiring diagrams of your 4Runner and the 09 Trail. You will likely have to swap some ECUs with the 09 Trail, as I am not aware of option to reprogram the traction ECU in the 4Runner.

I was hoping if someone knew if it's just a computer update that could be done. I wonder if it is a hardware upgrade like you say.

SO the Trail edition in 2009 has the same A-TRAC that the FJ Cruiser has. I am pretty sure it is the same thing you currently have only an option to turn it on/off. Like VSC cut really. Depending on what year you have. I know the early 2003-2005 had a mellower system than the latter years. All and all the ATRAC works pretty good with the center Diff locked. If that isn't cutting it then get a locker for the rear.

I have a 2009. It would be interesting if someone figured out how to activate it. From what I have read it is a more aggressive form of atrac
This is a quote from a post I read ONLY the 2009 4runner Trail Edition had this form of A-TRAC...the rest of the 4th gen 4runner had the 'normal' ATRAC.) It is a lot more aggressive at clamping down the slipping tire(s). It is ONLY available when you're in 4-LO. I would love a locker at some point. Definitely on the wish list.
