Default death by gps article

Saw this today... http://www.sacbee.com/2011/01/30/336...in-desert.html

My GPS has never tried to kill me, but on a family vacation several years ago it led me to the wrong entrance to Great Sand Dunes National Park. No big deal except that it was a hiking trailhead and on the other side of a mountain range from the actual entrance. Only took two-hours of fast driving in the minivan to correct the error. Funny thing was, another vehicle showed up right behind me as I was figuring out what went wrong. They had done the same thing for the same reason.

Very sad to read.

GPS is just a tool, but if you go in the backcountry always have a map handy as well.

People will read this and still put their life in the incapable hands of their GPS. So sad...

I followed my GPS to Big Bear, but knew right away I was going a back way and there would be risks involved. It's a sad story indeed, but people like that woman with her kid just lack plain common sense. They not equipped to be driving out into the desert alone (no supplies or recovery gear, 2wd, no one knows where they are, etc...) even with a tactical military GPS, maps, and a direct link to a satellite. Seems to me if you were in your Honda Civic and all of a sudden the pavement ended and you had open desert in front of you, that you would just turn around. It's a shame her kid had to pay the price for her mistakes and lack of judgment.

DV is no place for most folks to wander around, let alone leave your vehicle if you're already lost. Was involved in an ultra-marathon out there for several years. Amazing place, but definitely not family friendly, especially in July/August.

Sad stories, but I can understand how someone might let their GPS lead them far into trouble.

My GPS is decent, but its real purpose is to get you from A to B in the city. It's not built for the backcountry, even though I've been amazed at how many backcountry roads are shown in the database.

Having a GPS is a good idea, but I always carry other info--maps, guidebooks, and hopefully a bit of common sense.

I know its a bit off topic but i just read this article about an 84 year old man who was stranded in the desert for five days, he survived by drinking windshield washer fluid. that is one tough old guy!
