Default LED Lights 4th Gen Tail Lights

Are the 06 and newer tail lights worth buying, I can get them for 315 a set and I was wonder who has done it. The bigger question, is it worth it?

Yea, it is.... I wonder if it is worth it or not, may only be worth it if one or both get broken..

I've been debating it too, I ordered some of the '06 headlights the other day because I like HID bulbs but don't want to do a retro fit.

I thought about doing the tails as well but can't decide if it's worth it. There are some non-OEM ones on eBay for $170 but I don't know how good the quality is.

I read somewhere (I think 4wheel & off road) that LED tails are visible 60 ft. sooner at 55 mph, compared to regular bulbs because of the lower amount of energy required to fire the bulb. That seems like a lot considering 60' is almost half the 60-0 mph braking distance of most cars.

The LEDs are a nice upgrade,if you want to freshen up an older truck.

Toyota probably decided to go the LED route in 06 for added safety, like mentioned that their visibility from a distance is increased.

If you can justify the $315 price tag,go for it.

I got the aftermarket set and I don't think I paid over $200 and they have worked great without a issue for over a year now

i paid a lil more for a new OEM set. it improves the look, safety for not much cash imo.

it doesn't freshen it up so much that it doesn't look like it belongs on the older 4th gens. it's perfect.

I put a set of OEM LED tails on my '04 back when the LED tails first came out (in '06) because I hated the way the original tails looked almost pink. The LEDs are most definitely brighter. They light up the faces of the people in cars behind me at night much better. LOL

I think the higher visibility is reason enough to do it 60' is quite a bit. I also think my lights look a little pink and teh LED lights look more crisp. I think it would make the truck look a bit nicer. Problem is cost, and I work at Toyota.

Not to steer off topic but what did you pay for the kit and how hard was it to install? Are they a direct swap?

Short answer for you - YES, they do worth the buy.
LEDs are much brighter and faster, so you gaining safety there, plus they look good.
I've done this mod all the way back in 2005 and was the first to do it on pre-06 model. Back then I paid a little over $900 for both lights, they are original Toyota ones.

I recently did this swap with aftermarket ones and I have had no problems so far. If you compare the OEM and aftermarket there is a slight difference in the brightness but only noticable side by side and looking for it. I'd highly recommend doing it as it looks much better and is an easy direct swap. Shouldn't take more than 10-15 mins.

I paid ~$60 each for used OEM '06 lights from eBay. You also have to buy the filler panels, luckily one of the lights I got already had it attached (I just have to paint it to match with some OEM paint from autozone) the other was $34 from toyotapartzone.com.

I got a used '06 grille for $70, but you don't need it; it just leaves a small gap if you use the 03-05 grille. I also got some philips HID bulbs & ballasts for $140, but you can get a cheap HID kit for $40-50.

The lights are a direct 4 bolt swap (with the filler) but I think the grille is going to require modification. The HID kit is pretty much plug n play.

Do you have pics, I did not even think about the grille.

I ordered the headlights yesterday and I have not made up my mind on the rear

Wow, that's a high price. I paid $300 for my set shipped from Concelli Toyota. This was back when the '06 models first came out in '05. Nowadays they sell aftermarket LED tails that look exactly like the OEM units, but I've heard that they aren't the same quality as the OEM tails.

I am waiting on my passenger headlight and grille to get here, but a lot of people have done it. The_Josh has the headlights and grille, and MysticZ has just the headlights on his.

For you I think the grille would be a direct swap, I think it might hit my bumper. Since you don't have a stock bumper I think you would be fine.

I did the headlights first because that affects my visibility (the tails I have now still work fine) and I'm tired of getting flashed for HIDs with stock projectors. I actually got an OEM tail for $10 on ebay so now I'm just waiting on more $ or another good deal for the OEM passenger side.

edit: This is what the gap looks light

only difference is brightness..and it's not a big difference IMO. Actually my OEM's started to to get condensation in them and the aftermarkets haven't yet. I'd say it is a good buy...but that is my

Judging from my own past experiences, the difference is more than just the brightness. Aftermarket LEDs tend to to out far more often and quicker than the LEDs used by the OEMs. I think it's more of a quality issue than anything else. I've had aftermarket spoilers on two different cars that had LED 3rd brake lights and they've both had several individual LEDs go out, while at the same time I've never had an OEM LED go out on any vehicle I've owned.
