What are you looking to do with it?

Just get codes and clear them, get real time info from the system as you drive, etc.

A lot of people here use ScanGauge for that.

Any ODBII reader should be sufficient though.

You can go to Autozone and they'll do it for free, AAMCO also.

I just bought one of these: http://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-.../dp/B005NLQAHS Only works with android but paired with the Torque app (0-$5) it is a pretty cost effective solution.

I should say that I haven't actually used it yet but I've heard that it gives you pretty good bang for your buck.

Coincidentally I actually needed a code scanner today. I've owned this truck since 2010 and just decided to buy the scanner a week or 2 ago on a whim.

Well this morning my engine light and VSC trac lights came on. I didn't have time to deal with it this morning but after work I downloaded the free version of the Torque app, plugged in the scanner and paired to my phone. I got the code P0456. The app looked it up and gave a few possible causes, one being a loose fuel cap. Tightened the cap and cleared the code, then started it up and everything looks good.

Success so far, although I haven't driven around yet. Pretty happy with my purchase though.
