Default Help with buying used

Sons 96 T4 blew the head gasket. Not worth repairing at this stage. Will spend 18 months building his credit and saving for a 2012 Tacoma.

We found a 2004 T4R for a good deal but the owner reported an issue with the power steering. On a test drive the power steer works fine and there is no problem with its operations.

NOTWITHSTANDING: There is a sound like a failing p/s unit, but it does not make the usual whirring/growling sound I am familiar with when a p/s unit is on its way out.

I cant seem to isolate the sound over the sound of the engine. It consistently present and increases as does the engine speed but is inaudible from the cabin beyond 15mph.

All pulleys seem to be rotating in an appropriate plane (no wobble).

Thoughts?

It has a good service history and a cared for interior. Carfax reported no accidents and supported the service records.

It is an 04 V6 2WD.

Thx
Mark

Did the owner report just a noise or the actual PS not working?

I was wondering if you can take a risk and just use it as is, maybe flush the PS and see if ti helps.

Either way not much help, not sure what it could be.

Thx A. The owner was told by a friend there is a problem with the p/s. No mechanical inspection. Car drives great for $3K. Flush sounds like a good idea.

At 3k, that's doesn't sound like too bad of a deal (haven't KBBed the price) but I used Redline D6 ATF when I flushed mine. I would imagine it should be the same fluid for an 04. The PS flush was easy enough to do.

3K would leave change for a sas! JK, sounds like a great deal really!
Not sure about the sound? Sure it's coming from P/S or could it be wheel bearing, drive shaft or diffs? Those come to mind when you say it's making a whirling or growling type noise. Does it make i in park too with engine throttle feathering? That could be pulleys but they tend to make a high pitched noise. In Park when you turn the wheel side to side does the sound increase?

Some things to check on,

Bobby

Keep in mind that the 2004 V6 is the most common year and engine for head gasket issues. I'd make absolutely sure it doesn't have any issues with that. No overheating, no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil after running a while.

The sound is there even without truck rolling so that eliminates wheel bearings etc.

I'm still leaning towards the power steering unit or possibly the alternator.

Problem is son is difficult to track down to get a mechanic to look. I'm done looking at mechanical issues during the summer heat lol.

The engine seems to be running great. No leaks, oil in water, leak-down tests were good. No codes being thrown. The body has seen better days and the PO dyed the carpets black but it needs doing better so Ill attack that one having watched several videos.

Thank you for the suggestions to date. It gave me some other things to check and eliminate without staring at things for hours on end.

Well took it to a independent Toyota mechanic today. He too said it sounded like a power steering sound but when he put his stethoscope on it he determined it was not that and started listening at other points around the engine. A few minutes later he suggested a bearing but wanted to have it for a day to check properly. So made an appointment.

Then went to dealer for their opinion. They ruled out power steering and alternator and think its a bearing too. They wanted $125 to inspect but I decided we will go with the independent guy for now.

We are not concerned because we expected he would have to put some money into an old 4R until he gets his cash together for a late Tacoma in 12 months or so. We will need to start cleaning up his 3rd gen for sale (with blown head gasket) which will cover the cost of any work on the 4th gen. Wish I had room to part it out because theres money in his leather interior and such but I dont and cant be bothered anyway. It will be a bargain deal for someone with time to throw another engine in!.

While we were at the dealer I also tried to get them to approve the replacement of the dash for the 04 which has a crack in it, but apparently that "enhancement" program ended March 2017. Dang it!

Will update when I know more.
