Default Questions about upgrading a JBL system

Sorry about the new guy question but just wanted to get some clarification on what I can do or what to do on minor upgrades to the sound system in my 04 SR5 single disc JBL setup.

If I upgrade the head unit I know that I'll need a harness to be able to still use the jbl system but will I lose the center and surrounds? Will just the front, rears and sub work or will all the speakers work?

Also if I just upgrade the speakers for the front then do I need the crossovers that would come with a component speaker?

Just trying to figure out how the whole jbl system works, I'm guessing it's handling the crossover and power?

Thank you everybody.

Well how about another simpler question.

Are people happy with just upgrading the speakers on the jbl system? Like just upgrading the fronts? Having to use the onboard amp/crossovers might get in the way of any upgrades in sound is what I am thinking.

Just trying to not have to gut everything, just want some better sound no need for competition type system.

I upgraded my subwoofer, as several had done before me, and am super happy with the sound the system produces as it sits. Easily the biggest bang for the buck stereo mod. Do this first and listen before you think about other speakers, it's the weak link in the system.

Definitely something I will do down the line but it's the clarity of the mids and highs that get me right now. I can see how the sub will add some tighter bass but I want some clarity and definition.

I ordered a set of CDT components up front to see how the upgrade of just the fronts is.

If it isn't much then I'll add the head unit and run all new speaker wiring.
