Default 05 GX470KDSS Build Thread

After much searching found a 2005 Ash Blue Mica GX470 with KDSS in Texas, drove a half dozen neglected or overpriced examples prior. Got it home to Colorado in 24hrs round trip. KDSS is the jam, so happy I held out, Levinson audio, rear air, rear DVD, minimal dings and scratches from having been a mom car. Complete dealer service history and then some, 18mpg if you take easy, cruise at 75, pass people at 90 on mountain roads, at altitude, no problem. Planning the ultimate road trip vehicle, drive 1000miles a day, climb up a rocky two track, camp, get home, drama free.

Getting started with:
GTA Blue tooth module
2015 4runner trail wheels
265/70/17 KO2's (E-Load)

Prodigy P2 brake controller
Weathertech floor/trunk liner
Covercraft seat covers

Looks great! What do you think of the 6112's ride? What height setting did you go with, and how did it affect the ride height? What model did you buy (4runner, FJ Cruiser, etc). What shocks did you use in the back?

Thanks

I like the ride of the 6112 allot with larger heavy tires, very plush, I switched to stock size snow tire setup for winter and they are a bit harsh but still nice. I have the 46-227287 6112 series that are for 4runner/FJ, I put them in the middle setting, about 1.5" lift in the front, rear is still the stock setup with sensors at full height, but I have 5160's on the way. Planning to make some airbag spacers and retain the system for now.

Good luck.

Thanks, it has been a great all-around vehicle, for the money you cant beat it. I just installed the 5160's in he rear, ride is very solid and smooth.

I found a 2005 GX470 gray at a small car dealer. It has the sport and KDSS. Can you tell me why you were so inclined to get the KDSS?

I have to pay about a $1000 premium to get the sport model than the regular model, so I'm wondering why the KDSS is that good,

@LexusManny,

"Better" is of course a relative term, if I was doing a long travel serious off-road build I would actually not recommend it. You cant do long-travel with KDSS, non of the aftermarket armor fits, sliders are more difficult to attach etc. Having driven both and now owning a KDSS model I would make the same decision again. My goal has always been a sleeper expedition/overland vehicle with everyday practicality. In a nutshell the KDSS allows minimal body roll on the street and additional flex on the trail, it's a brilliant system that actually works. The non KDSS model handles like a waterbed, but I am a recovering sports sedan snob so take that for what its worth. IMHO 1k premium for a KDSS/sport model is a steal, but as always with vehicles condition=value, options are personal preference.

Good luck with the purchase.

Thanks. My goal is also expedition and mild to medium trails. I rather not lift more than 2-in and I believe it's okay to lift up to 2".

Also, I've read that sometimes the KDSS boot starts leaking. I'm not sure how much to fix that, but I heard it's a concern.

I've also read many times that people change the front upper control arms, but I'm not sure why. Are the OEM too weak for mild/medium trails?

You can lift up to 4" no problem. The KDSS system IS very expensive to service, if it fails but that's rare. You will get the most out of a mild lift with a good adjustable UCA like SPC's because they allow more droop, the OEM's are fine for 2" lift too much more and you will run out of camber adjustment, but they are plenty strong, its a 120.
