I never noticed a difference between the brakes on a Runner or Taco until I put extra weight on the front of the Taco, bumper and winch, it increased the stopping distance but used to it now. Almost ran a stop sign .

I have run with the lowest octane in CA since day one and have not noticed any pinging. But this discussion promoted me to read up on the VVTI and I am thinking of trying 91 for a few tanks after I reset the ECU .

It's basically the sound you hear When Clark Griswald pulls up in the driveway with the new "Family Truckster" and turns it off. I had about 1800 miles on mine when I first heard the pinging. It's common for the Tacoma's to ping on gas with an octane level bellow 89. Your motor won't detonate, the computer will retard the timing before the motor is at risk of detonating. If you ask your local dealer they will tell you to run on 89 or higher octane gas. It's not something they advertise, but they know it happens and they're in contact with Toyota corp. to figure out a way to resolve it.

20k miles on mine and was curious about the pinging, never paid attention to it I guess I will switch to 89 to see if there is a difference

I've been used to using 89 in the 4Runner to try keeping the injectors clean so I've continued on with my Taco.

Just an update, I have just under 4k on the odo and still using 87 octane; no pinging that I can notice. Just per my ocd, the vents for both driver and passenger are positioned very dumb imho. I feel like it is impossible to get the air to blow straight at you, but that I guess is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.

I like the 4Runners a lot, I'm actually thinking about trading in my Taco for one. Either one you decide to buy will be nice, that is for sure. I've had the taco a little while now and what I would say is that the V6 is a lot smoother running and accelerates much better, some (not all) of the TRD models get a really bad squeak in the rear end, and do not go for a regular cab (they are just too tight).

I really love my Tacoma and Tacomas in general, but after having mine for about a year I think I would rather have the comfortable ride and nice options that the 4Runner gives.

I like Tacomas but could never own one - too small. A Tundra is very likely in my future at some point, particularly if the 2017 diesel comes to fruition

Yeah, but I have it off at the moment because the weather here is so bad. I'll put it back on right before I go on my next trip.

It's from a vendor on Tacoma world. Let me know if you're interested. It should be dry and ready to mount up tomorrow (well today, Saturday)
