Default HDPE fuel tank?

The recent highway bridge collapse in Atlanta was caused by burning HDPE, or so I understand. I assume that the fuel tank of my 05 4Runner is made of HDPE. I know it is made of some sort of plastic. So what do you think about the safety of a ten year old HDPE gasoline tank?

It's fine, unless you have some homeless people living underneath your truck......then you May have an issue!!!!

There is no issue!!

Not a problem. Flash point of 430F, autoignition point of 810F. It's a great material for fuel tanks.

Gas tanks are normally not designed to be burned

Realistically it is normally a composite of multiple layers to provide impact resistance and give in case of an accident. I believe they figured this out in race cars to prevent gas tanks from rupturing during impact, where these "plastic" tanks performed much better than metal due to the flexibility.

Basically as long as the gas stays in the tank it should not burn. A tank that is less likely to rupture will be less likely to have gas on the outside and burn.

Waterboy, not sure exactly what caused the HDPE to catch on fire in ATL but I would not be concerned about the gas tank on the 4Runner or it's longevity. Most vehicles these days have a plastic or thermal type resin or composite for the gas tanks. Also the tanks are covered with a metal skid plate fro added protection.
