Default 2008 Wyoming Trip

I just got back from a two week trip in Wyoming. Had a great time. I will try to post up some pictures as time becomes available.

Here is a teaser. It is a video of an obstacle that I have always considered to difficult and risky to attempt. This year I went for it. The obstacle consists of a deep ditch in a ravine. You may or may not be able to tell from the video but it is very nearly straight down entering the ditch and straight up leaving the ditch with a big drop off on the left side. There is a significant rollover possibility (into the ravine) as the vehicle is very off camber, it is extremely steep, and the soil is unreliable. This path has clearly not been navigated in many many years. It was quite a thrill.

I enjoyed the video very much! What was the "need" to get to the other side? Better hunting area?

Great Pics Ed.
I love Wyoming (could do without the snow, though).

Where were you?

It did not snow too bad while we were there. We had a few days of light snow with only about an inch of accumulation. We were in the southwest, near Green River/Rock Springs.

By getting across the ravine we were able to connect to another ridge. It would have been several miles of driving to get to the other ridge otherwise. There of course is the "we've go to give this a go" factor as well.

I spent some time right around there photographing wild horses on the Great Divide Basin http://www.ronnehrig.com/horses/index.html
and in Medicine Bow NF (then went west and north through Yellowstone and up into Pryor Mtn).

Never noticed the Killpecker Dunes field before, just saw that now. Have you gotten up around there?

Lots of National forest and BLM land around there, looks like a good place for a 2 week trip, and an interesting variety of terrain.

Looking forward to your pics.

I am usually pretty busy while I am out there and don't get a chance to see much of Wyoming except the area I am in. Wyoming is an awesome place for exploring and off-roading. Fantastic trails everywhere!

I did get a great shot of an elk though...and I got some photos of deer, antelope, grouse, etc.

Here are a few more pictures:

This looks like a fun road. Never got the chance to take it before it snowed.

Can you see 90 elk in this picture? They are there!

Spectacular geological formation:

Real time GPS tracking with topographic maps and aerial photography has become an important part of my off road adventuring. Topofusion is my software of choice for this.

New this year (to me) is APRS hardware and software which allows me to transmit my location and receive the location of others who have the same type of equipment. I am able to view my location and the location of others on topographic maps and aerial photography using a great piece of software called USAPhotomaps.

Trailer definitely beats camping for that weather.

That 2nd pic is excellent!!! Love the colors and contrast.
