My door handle (for lack of a better word) on my rear hatch has a very nasty sticky feel to it. I'm referring to the rubber cover that is over the button to release the hatch.
I tried to clean it the other day with some silicone to see if I could get the stickiness to go away, but that made it worse. I'm just curious if anybody else has ad a similar problem? Also, I noticed there are a couple of screws on either side...has anybody tried replacing the rubber cover? Anybody know the part #? UPDATE: I was able to locate the part. Here's a link to my write up on how to replace it: http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showt...109#post121109

I was going to comment about sticky stuff getting on your hands, but it was just going to be in poor taste.
![]() But seriously, you can check this out: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...layCatalogid=0 not sure if that's exactly right. You could just go to a dealer parts counter and they can look in the computer really fast and see what's replaceable back there. Or try some rubbing alcohol on a cloth, see if that de-stickies it.

Only thought I had (beyond the same comment Mike was going to make) is to try some of that GooGone stuff. Has worked well for me in the past with other residue.

Isopropyl alcohol should do it, but be careful around paint. It won't strip it outright, but if you rub IPA into paint long enough, it'll start to wear through.

![]() I looked at the link and I'm thinking it's either part #9 or part #2 in the diagram. I was more curious if anybody else has had similar problems. I'm trying to figure out how the hell it happened so I can hopefully avoid it from happening in the future.

I have to wonder if someone put some sticky stuff up there to mess with you. Or there is some type of leak. I imagine there is electrical silicone inside the switch.

The leak is my big concern. I'm just hoping it's not a sign of a bigger problem.

I'd hate to revive an old thread but i searched cuz my 07 has the same problem. I just bought the part today and the dealer told me its actually a switch and u cant just buy the rubber cover, he said they are selling the hell out of these things because of the same problem....the part was $70. But i do have a question, how does the panel come off on the inside of the hatch so i can disconnect and replace the switch? Does it just pop off? Thanks

iirc it just clipped in....pop it off.
Edit- there may be a screw holding it on under that little door. Check for those first. |

There is one bolt that holds the hanging handle that needs to be removed as well, but it is mostly clips.

According to the dealer I went to, they want me to replace the entire switch (part# 69110A on the print out from the dealer) for about $250. This site shows a "Switch Assebly Door Opener" for $45 (Part #9 in the diagram): http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...layCatalogid=0

Please let me know if you get this worked out. I just noticed today (100 degrees out) that the rubber button has completely melted and that is where the stickiness is coming from. I too need to replace the rubber button cover...

I found two different part #'s on toyodiy
69110A LOCK ASSY, W/MOTOR BACK DOOR 69110-35062 - $279.86 69308 PROTECTOR SUB-ASSY, BACK DOOR LOCK 69308-35010 - $32.58 I thought that site used to have detailed diagrams, but I can't seem to find them now. I'm gonna call my local dealership and see if they have the cheaper one in stock for me to look at. EDIT: I just contacted the dealership and they didn't have the "protector" part in stock so I ordered it. I'll let you guys know if that's the part when I get it in a few days.

I went to the dealer today and the part I ordered was not the correct one (69308 PROTECTOR SUB-ASSY, BACK DOOR LOCK 69308-35010 - $32.58 )
I talked to someone else (who finally knew what they were doing) and he was able to find the part (it was about $60 and he showed me others from a Sienna but the harness was different), but he said they are currently on back order. I put my name down to reserve one. As soon as it comes in, i'll post the part #.

I have the exact same problem with my 2007 4-Runner and to make matters worse my husband has a 2007 Toyota Prius with the "sticky handle." I called Toyota yesterday to ask if there was a recall or any other complaints and the woman informed me she had not heard of this problem yet. Unfortunately both cars are out of warranty so as everyone knows they want to charge to replace this apparent defect. I was wondering if anyone who has posted this information has called Toyota to report the problem? I have searched the internet about repairing it myself but I think placement of tape over the sticky handle is very tacky (no pun intended).

Yes my rear hatch is sticky too. It is actually dripping as if it melted in the hot sun. I suspected it was defective and asked my dealer. They wanted $285 to fix it. I declined and asked for the number to Toyota. When I called the lady said they have no record of any other complaints regarding this problem. She gave me a case number and said if they recall I could get reimbursement. I think we are going to order the part and have an independent mechanic replace it.
