Default 4mudder's 4Runner

In the beginning...

Actually, I was snot nosed 7 year old when my family came to the USA from Ukraine. My dad's first new car was a1979 Corolla, bulletproof little wagon... Thus the relationship began. My adopted granpa had a 84 TOY pickup with 165,000 miles on it and when I met my wife she was driving an 81 TOY pickup with a 6 inch lift and 35s (also well over 150,000 miles on it). I was hooked! I took her truck and gave her mine. When her truck blew a head gasket we panicked and traded it on a 89 Camry(needed a 4 door anyway). In 1993 I still got $3000 for her 81 TOY from the dealer sight unseen, body damage and all. That Camry served us through our son's middle school, high school and college years (High school grad gift). He later sold it to one of his buddies with over 175,000 mi on it and the paint still looked new. The Camry was in the repair shop once, the whole time we owned it. Cracked coil housing, coil replaced, $212.00. Anyone see a trend here? So after years of driving junkers and paying of the Harley, my wife told me I deserved a new truck. She wanted an SUV so a 2005 SR5 V8 4Runner was the logical choice. I bought it knowing I was going to lift it and wheel it. I knew it would have bulletproof reliability and legendary off roadability. I was very disappointed to discover the aftermarket was completely ignoring the 4Runner (other than spacer lifts). The final straw came when the FJC came out and 4 months later Fabtek had a 6 inch lift for it. I called them and they said there was no demand for the 4Runner so they weren't going to make one. So spacers it was. The first mod were the Cornfed spacers with Rancho struts and shocks. The second mod came about 5 minutes after the first was finished. My wife took a look at the new lift after two days in the garage and promptly proclaimed my tires were too small and I need bigger ones. Ordered 33s the next day along with some AR Outlaws. When I found Toyota120 5 months ago I was amazed. There was so much I did not know, but after 5 months I have a plan... a wicked, evil, expensive? all about function (no bling) plan...

Mods for the immediate future:
Shrockworks sliders - on their way
4Crawler 1.5 Body Lift - will pick up early July and say hello to Roger when I see him
Uniden PRO 520XL CB, Little Wil ant - next week (plan for an in-dash install)
Integrate my Ext CB speaker into center console - next week (will update original thread too)

That's how I got here, I promise to keep it short from here on out. (And yes I will post pics)

Don't have any pics of it stock, but we all know what it looked like brand new.

First it was Cornfed...

Then the wheel and tire package...

Notice I was able to keep my mudflaps...

Then the Bluetooth module and integrated speaker... Install pics

Then the Volant CAI... True CAI mod

Then added soundproofing to the floor and fenderwells... Install pics

So here is the overall look today (JUN 08)...

Default A little muddin'

Went to my local mud racing track today. The owner was kind enough to let me play in his back yard. The 4Runner will climb anything! I was by myself so I took it easy and none of this was difficult but man was it fun!

Back yard

Playing in the creek...

Approach angle seems to be good...

Ledges are not an issue...

What was that noise??

Flexin' and stuffin'...

I even found some rocks to play in!
Poser shots!!!...

My stock skid plate is cryin'

No RTI ramp needed, my wheel is off the ground!

Damn! That's not going to buff out. Looks like I justified that Shrockworks bumper! Now to convince the wife...

Finished off the day by tackling the Moto X course...

I got plenty of clearance!!!

Oh I thought about it, and even though I'm not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, I decided against it. I didn't even have a buddy with me to help pick up the pieces if I grenaded the front end. Besides, the wife was pretty pissed about the front end damage already. I did mention replacing the bumper to her... she did not say no...

If you came home with the bumper smashed because you went off the ramp, she might not have been too happy

Actually the damage on the pass side was from posin' on the rocks! Serves me right for showboating.

Yeah Rob! Let's do that. I have a very flexible schedule right now, 1 day on, 3 days off. I get tired of wheelin' by myself! As far as the SW bumper goes, I'm gonna have to strain pretty hard to $hit $2000 for a bumper and a winch right now. I leave for California in 6 mos, so trying to save money, sell the house, yada, yada, yada... But I'm all up for a few daytrips to tear up some dirt, specially if you can pull me out!!! LOL

Looks great, Chris! I noticed your radiator alot.

I don't have the body lift or a SW / ARB bumper yet, but since I'm out on the trail every weekend during hunting season, I was nervous that a nice big stick would get up between the front of the skid plate and the bumper and do a nice job putting a hole in the radiator. So I got some dimond plate, attched it to the front of the skid plate and the bottom of the bumper. It's no Bud Built (not designed to be), but does add some protection up front. Didn't impact cooling. I'll post a pic in the gallery section where my 4Runner pics are.

Your truck looks awesome!

Wow, never thought of that till you mentioned it.
Went back through my pics and I see what you mean. I will need to work out a solution soon because even rocks kicked up on the freeway have the potential to damage radiator with that gap. Thanks for pointing that out.
