Default Truetrac v. ARB Expereinces

I know the difference between a Truetrac differential and an ARB Airlocker (LSD v. selectable locker), and in theory how each should operate. But I am interested in hearing some firsthand observations on how they operate. In particular, has anyone been let down by a rear Truetrac "boosted" by stock A-TRAC traction control?

For example, if you lift one rear wheel with a jack, is the Truetrac strong enough to drive off of the jack? Has anyone been stuck with a wheel spinning in the air with a Truetrac?

I just got a deal on a used front regeared/ARB clamshell, and I am looking to regear the rear with a Truetrac or Airlocker. I like the idea of having the constant "as needed" traction from a Truetrac. I have a jeep with a rear Detroit Locker and like the fact that it gives you traction when you need it--no switches, not thinking, its just there. No way I would put a Detroit Locker in my 4th Gen, but a Truetrac seems like a good opinion. I just don't want to regret the choice.

I know a couple members here have the same setup I'm thinking about--ARB Front / Truetrac Rear.

Thx, JB

The rear axle typically has a lot more depending on it to lock offroad, as most of the weight and traction is in the back when climbing steep obstacles.

I like my ARB and ability to select when it does what.

That said I have no experience with the Trueurac, so hopefully it is fully open on the street )even under power on a turn), and can basically fully lock with ATRAC when needed. Would suck to be in a tight spot and the locker is hit and miss.

A Trutrac is a torsen type limited slip similar to the center diff in the v8 4runner and many rear ends that toyota has put into its trucks and performance cars such as the FRS.
The engagement is smooth so i would assume that is a plus. If one wheel is completly off the ground it wont transer power to the other side unless atrac is actuating or you put a bit of pressure of the brake pedal.
My plan is to run a trutrac in the rear and an arb front with 4.56 gears. My 4runner is my winter commuter so the added traction would be welcome a few days of the year. And will hopefully aleviate some understeer.
Also i fiigure that the rear has so much more travel than the front that it is less likely to lift a tire than the front ( especially when i go to a metal tech LT rear).

I just ordered up gears, true trac, and an arb rd121 for the front.
Being that this is my winter commuter i might not install this till the spring cause im not sure how long it will take me to do all the work.
Might do a quick trip to moab between christmas and newyears just to give me a good baseline before i add the traction aids. If so ill try to get some video. Anyone else want to go?

I would love a quick trip to Moab. But that is not so realistic from from the Bay Area. It's been almost 20 years since I've been there.

I'm 90% sure I'm going with the truetrac in back probably from ECGS. I picked up a cheap 8" housing to send them for the core. I'm hoping I can make up some of the cost by selling the matching front and rear with stock 3.91 gears.

I see you are going with 4.56 gears--do you have a 4-speed or a 5-speed trans?
