Not quite yet. I need some leather welding protective clothing. I also need a new eye shield helmet. The old one I have/had has such a tiny window to look out of. I saw what's available now and they're 5" by 6" or something and auto dimming. Auto dimming is way cool and large window is sweet but the price tag isn't so sweet.

So with that said. There are a few fabricators here. What's the recommendation for a new eye shield? The miller and 3m helmets I looked at were upwards of $300. OUCH!!!

Yea Harbor has an auto dim for $50. I'd like to hear from the fab folks here what it's worth.

I've also shopped Northern but I didn't see anything there that I'd rather have than what airgas has local. But the price is stopping me cold.

I've got this one.

It was about $230ish.. a pretty penny, but if you take care of it, it'll last almost forever with easily replaceable parts that will probably be available for years and years to come. It even comes with several outside lenses and a couple inside lenses.

Headgear is very comfortable, and the hood is very light. Auto-dim works perfect and has a wide range of adjustments.

I have used cheaper auto-dims.. they can be hit or miss. I would suggest the Hobart brand if you want to save some cash; they are made by Miller and look pretty nice.

You could always go for a passive, old-school hood since you're not going to be making a living welding. They will never give you any trouble and are cheap! You can get pretty good at flipping it up and down pretty with just a little practice - makes for a sore neck though..

My anyway..

I use a 4x6 window #11. No fancy auto stuff. Cant afford it. You should use the darkest sheild you can see with. they make a #13 but I was not sure when I got my 11 how dark it would be but it would have been fine. I had been using a #10 for years. I like the mirror finish on the sheild it cleans up better IMO. But I also put a clear plastic sheild in front of the tint sheild to save the glass from overhead welds.

Keep us posted.

Kyle thanks. That's the one I'm looking at. Slept on it and but I'm not there yet. After dropping a grand on the welder I'm not so excited to drop another 300. But I probably will. I've also thought of going old school but with a brand new fancy mig and just now learning auto set is an option I'm turning away from old school and moving into the high priced 21st century. It's 7am and I need a beer. Spending cash is stressful stuff. Coffee will have to do. Thanks for the feed back guys.

Rob go for the auto tint you will be glad you did. When learning how to weld the auto dimming makes it so much easier to focus on placement and technique of welding without having to nod to get the face shield to drop down. It's sucks to have to place the nozzle, drop the face shield, tack, raise face shield to observe, drop face shield to complete weld. Wow maybe i'm lazy?

I love mine and would have paid twice as much for the convenience. Have fun with it and great to see another member trying their hand at fabricating. Much pride and gratification when you make something of your own, or are able to modify something.

So I took a lunch break today...and went to airgas. Got the Miller elite in inferno for $300. And some protective clothing and some fluxed wire. I'll go home tonight and reverse the polarity of the welder, and if I'm able to play, run my first bead with the 211. I really appreciate the feedback. Y'all helped part me from my $300. Thanks a lot!

Rob,
Way to step up with your own welder. I soooo want one, and to relearn how to weld. It's been like 20 years since I laid down my last bead. X-mas for sure...

I'm going to have a chance today to play with the new MIG and use the pricey helmet. I picked up some scrap at the fabrication shop down the street from me. I'll post up how things work out and if any of my welding skills are still there. High school was a long time ago.
